Grinds 2nd gear, pops out of first gear (Supra RZ V160 6speed)

Hello all,

So, just picked up my supra, a 1993 RZ 6speed, Jspec. 103kms, mostly stock. Only intake/exhaust/fmic. Sadly, I am already having problems with it.

Car basically will not go into 2nd gear without grinding unless the car is stationary or at extremely low RPMs and babied into gear.

First gear pops out frequently (about half the time) and often has trouble engaging properly.

Clutch doesn't "engage" until after a few inches of pedal travel.

I also observed a very light buzz sound when the car is in neutral.

It is a bit notchy in other gears but all others go in without issue for the most part.

Bought this car from a dealer who got it from Auction so never got the opportunity to drive it.

I know it doesn't have the "v160" miracle fluid that I read about constantly.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt a rebuild is cheap anywhere for the v160 sadly.

I'm afraid it's a Synchro problem and possibly the clutch as well.

I'm holding out a small amount of hope maybe worn shifter bushings are what is making it pop out of gear...but being unable to use 2nd gear is a real PITA to be honest. Really not trying to rebuild this car already I just got her.

If you price up a set of bearings and say a couple of gears, synchro hubs and synchro rings, plus sundries and labour I would hope you bought the car dirt cheap! Over here V160 Getrag parts are extremely expensive and many are special order from Japan only. I'd be looking through the classifieds for a good used box. Problem is nobody ever sells a knackered box with loads of issues, they always claim they are sub 50,000 miles and in as new order ;)

Looking like the seller will be providing a rebuilt box for install. Any recommendations for a clutch setup?

Also, is a lightened flywheel really worth it here? Trying to see what else I should replace while everything is out. I am young and $$ doesn't fall off trees for me, so trying to do a value check to see what's worth it and what isn't.

My intentions for the car for the foreseeable future are BPU only. Don't plan on going over the limits of the stock turbos.

I do an uprated stock type clutch that avoids the annoying chatter and rattles a none stock, undamped flywheel causes. Will handle BPU with comfort.

I have sold loads and they get great feedback. I cxan ship to Japan, but would need to get a price should you be interested. If you want a dual plate clutch (you don't NEED one...) I heartily recommend OS Giken ones, very civilised with excellent spares backup.

I would go with one of Chris wilsons uprated/stock clutches and a new stock flywheel as the solid lightened ones can make a horrendous noise and they don't drive that nice under everyday condition!!

That would be the best setup for BPU, anything else would be overkill:)

No, I'm not sure where the transmission will come from. The difficulty is finding one first apparently haha.

Need to decide if anything else is worth upgrading while the tranny is out. I really only plan on the car being BPU and on stock turbos for the next couple years while I live in Japan.

Does anyone know what a "buzz" sound when the car is idling in neutral would indicate? As soon as I push the clutch in, the buzz goes away.

Sounds like clutch release bearing to me?

Simple fix while the box is off

Usually, you can find everything in Dubai. I ordered some of the parts from there and asked the middleman about gearbox prices. the full new V160 costs about 9000USD which is 6000-ish pounds? also, he said that they could find a refurbished one in almost as new condition for half that price... don't know how import taxes in UK are, but yeah, might be worth looking into. May sound strange - importing Japanese car parts from Dubai, but it's much cheaper that way. :D I ordered two rear wheel bearings from NSK (which is as good as koyo, later being the OEM Toyota part maker) complete with seals and that strange wire clip thingy, hatch rubber stoppers and cushions, V160 rear oil seal, all for 165 USD total, which is 105 pounds and IIRC, it would be a bit more expensive over there in UK...

Thank you all for the ideas and help, I will definitely be looking into that.

Still searching for a rebuilt transmission here in Japan, previous owner is taking a bit longer than I had thought, but I'm hopeful it will get resolved soon.
