That's too much, but try it, long term the oil will foam up with that much in it, assuming the engine was running at the time you dipped it. But if you still have missing gears I think you can look elsewhere than fluid level. Givd it a brief test drive though. Gently....

If it's going to be standing where the work is to be done, drain the sump now and replace the plug, that'll give the top end a week to drain down which will make working under it and resealing it both easier.

 

If you wipe the dipstick on a piece of white paper it'll show the colour.

After draining what was black crap, refilling with fresh, and wiping on something white, I'm not seeing much fresh, so I think a full drain may be a good idea

 

Then leave it until my filter and gasket arrive and start new
