v6shep
Not red as id think it should be after emptying 2.5 litre and replacing with same amount, to me it's now too much but now smells fresh Edited June 30, 2015 by v6shep (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
That's too much, but try it, long term the oil will foam up with that much in it, assuming the engine was running at the time you dipped it. But if you still have missing gears I think you can look elsewhere than fluid level. Givd it a brief test drive though. Gently....
v6shep
Definitely no difference, so next step is to wait for my filter as dave suggested to change. Looking at what I've replaced over time, the car hasn't been bothered with for decades
David P
If it's going to be standing where the work is to be done, drain the sump now and replace the plug, that'll give the top end a week to drain down which will make working under it and resealing it both easier. If you wipe the dipstick on a piece of white paper it'll show the colour. Edited June 30, 2015 by David P (see edit history)
v6shep
After draining what was black crap, refilling with fresh, and wiping on something white, I'm not seeing much fresh, so I think a full drain may be a good idea Then leave it until my filter and gasket arrive and start new
