K22SUP
Hi guys car has Hks 264 cams and adjustable pulleys and I have just found out from previous owner it didn't start hesitating till he done the belt so I am looking for best way to set the whole lot up again as far as I see it's quite a big job and we need template that bolts to crank ect anyone got one ? Or done this
bignum
Never heard of any template tbh, if the belt/cams are a tooth out you`d know about it, if the cam gears just need setting up i`m pretty sure you would use a timing light/gun.
baldy
I think ed is talking about a cam timing disc, A timing light is for ignition timing
K22SUP
Yes that's correct for cam timing
K22SUP
Think the thing a need to get it right is a degree wheel

Ian C
You don't need one on the 2JZ - set the pulleys to zero adjustment, and there should be a dimple on them that you line up with a notch on the top of the metal backing plate behind where they sit. This is with the engine at TDC.
K22SUP
Hi Ian why are they being set at zero if they are designed to be run at specific spec I don't understand
Ian C
Set them to zero and the car will run and won't hesitate if the problem at the moment is the cam timing being off. Once that's sorted, then you can tweak the cam timing with the adjustment to help get a better idle and so forth
K22SUP
Thanks Ian I have ordered a degree wheel as well get it done properly a don't see the point in the car having these things of its not setup correctly
Chris Wilson
You need a dial test indicator, magnetic stand, extended finger for the DTI, and to make a ferrous plate to mount the DTI stand to, on the head. Plus a twin cam is possibly not the easiest engine to learn cam timing on. Get a pro to do it unless you like headaches If you just set it up with the adjusters set to "0" and line up the dots the engine will be fine, getting it spot on will probably make an unnoticeable difference. K22SUP
thanks guys i will get them set to zero just now i work at a garage and we have a dial indicator ect so i might get them set up after that surely that would be better for the cams to be the most efficient
pedrosixfour
Set the cams to zero THEN check the shim tolerances on the valves. If they're not within the required specs then there is no point continuing any further with dialling in the cams.
K22SUP
Set cams to zero and I have to say much better now so once coil clips are done I will carry on thanks again for the comments
