As the GTR makes her way.. A sensible replacement arrives.

So the GTR itch has been met, executed and relinquished.

I really did have some sweet memories with her.. A car which shall be missed.

However one must start a new chapter as with most things in life. Your perspective changes and you become more sensible the older you get *cough cough*...

Well im getting on abit. Almost 30. Time to grow up a little. Need something a little more practical as a daily runner. Afterall the Supra is going to itch my power needs.

So a good friend of mine suggested a motor....

Within the week I test drove it, really liked it and bought it...

BMW F10 M5..

Abit of a beast in stock form even. Back to my natural driving habitat. Rear wheel drive!

Instantly the build quality shone through over the GTR. It is German after all, so no surprise there really. However what was surprising was the feedback I recieved from the car. These are such easy cars to throw around. The GTR for some reason I used to feel disconnected from. A great car nonetheless, but not suited perhaps to my driving style.

Another thing, these bloomin 'DCT' (Double clutch transmissions). This thing shifts faster then the GTR. It's something which did not actually register for a while. My expression at the speed of shift was literally  for approx two weeks. Even now I am somewhat in AWE at how fast this thing shifts.

They have even more settings then the GTR. The feedback through the steering wheel for example is immense in 'Sport plus' mode. It stiffens up so much that you literally feel everything the front wheels are feeding back. However If you're popping down to Waitrose keep her in standard setting and it's light as a feather. Clever..

She not bad looking either. Certainly more understated then the GTR. I made sutble changes to her. Adding a front lip and using crayons on the kidney grilles...

This car I was going to be sensible in...

Which is exactly why I took it to Evolve for a remap... image

From a map they push over 700 BHP. Happy days. However it is costly, infact same price as purchasing a Syvecs effectively, but the method is very time consuming. These Ecu's have only just been cracked since the birth of these cars from 2011 onwards. They are complex. So much so that the damn things throw a different code everytime you lock the car..

So at a little over 700 ponies from a base map, a downpipe and possibly exhasut system soon seem them push very close to 800 Bhp. Altho I do love the stock 'valvetronic' setup. No need to peeve the neighbours off then, switch to sport mode once in open road and she blips sweetly and pops at 3,000 to 4,000 RPM at the 'lift-off' your right foot, not to mention becomes far more responsive... :sly: Easy as pie. They are such fun to drive. Honestly much more fun then the GTR for my driving taste. Which is far from subtle. Granted the rear tyres burn up more and it's a mission keeping her in a straight line but hey that's part of the fun of actually 'driving' right?

It also has a load of features, such as head-up display and suspension and throttle response setting, aswel as the steering feedback sensitivty as mentioned earlier, but I tell you what is pretty clever.. The cameras on this model. It's an optional extra, but other then the rear-view camera (with obstacle alerts) it gives you a GTA style image (almost google earth like) of your car and surroundings...

image

Plus blind spot cameras at the front of the bumpers...

image

Anyway truth is I dont really utilise these features much, thankfully I have no issues with my parking however its nice to know they are there and can make life easier.

So there you have it, a sensible car I need not feel the urge to go racing in, or be a holigan in. After all.. It's purpose was to get the kids to school and carrying a shopping load in comfort...

YEAH RIGHT!!! :innocent:

NOT before I scare the cr@p out of a couple of Supercars!!:D

image

LOOK, THE CAMERAMEN ARE POINTING QUICKLY DO SOMETHING INTELLIGENT!...

image

Well, would be rude not to right?:more:

image

So four new tyres later... Was it worth it? Probably not (although it does allow an excuse for wider rears!), but would I do it again? Does it rain in Spain?

So there you have it... From one holigan to apparently another..

image

Moral of the story, despite age, you can tame the man, but evidently you cannot tame the boy..:senile:

God bless,

Al.

My mate has the X5 M50, cost him 75k I think and its a total beast even standard. The amount of toys is crazy and the birds eye camera is very cool. I don't like the looks on the M5 but you can't dispute its performance. The E92 M3 though...stunning, came close to buying one a few times before getting the Cayman (now also sold).

Lovely front on yours though.

Thanks gents.

stop spending money on stuff like this and get that old merc back on the road!

Mercs in the Bodyshop bud getting a full restoration! ;)

wow love this, wouldn't have imagined it shooting up to 700hp on a map! that's crazy. What can the motor take?

Any videos?

Not sure what they can take but I imagine around 900 BHP from the 4.4 V8 lump.

Its a beauty ali. Nicer then your gtr. Have to look everytime i drive past

Thanks bro. It does look nicer doesnt it? I wasnt even much of a BM man before this :D

Swing by during week will take you for a spin.

Great read up!! Got to say it does look lovely and certainly nice stubble touches!!

Nice professional photo's too, looks like a magazine shoot!

Now where is the video's of the noise?! :D

Only Vid i have is abit pants unfortunately. I had to stop by the side of the circuit and ask someone to film. Would have been nice someone catching the drifting tho.

Epic motor mate! i`d much prefer that over a gtr, i raced the ring taxi last year and was surprised how well it went especially being 4up.

I prefer them too tbh! Having had both, can honestly say all round the M5 is better. As a drivers car it also excels. But still have love for the GTR.

That will do nicely! :D

Sounds brilliant and seems to handle very nicely too!

Glad you approve :D

Hopefully see you soon!

It doesn't sound like E60's are particularly unreliable, but the SMG II gearboxes aren't well loved, and you're looking at £2k for clutch pack replacement every 40k-50k miles it seems... (says the guys who's never owned one but has been looking...)

my german made 320d bmw has a mitsubushi turbo on it, :wtf: I was surprised . I was even more suprised when it failed at 70k and had to get another genuine bmw mitsubushi turbo to fix it. at least i didn't pay the £1700 for a new genuine bmw mitsubushi turbo the dealer wanted ,i managed to get a genuine bmw mitsubushi turbo much cheaper.
