Thinner oil and valve stem seals

Recommended Posts

Cutting a long story short ive been having problems with a small puff of blue smoke on cold start but more worryingly alot of blue smoke when letting off the throttle after a spirited blast, only does this when car is hot and if you give it a proper blast before letting off

After various reading and responses from here it seemed stem seals were more likely than turbo seals

BUT

After going through reciepts i knew the car had been serviced a week before i bought it and after checking the papers it has had 5w30 used.

Ive changed this to the correct oil recommended on here and after a good 50 miles of driving i cannot see any blue smoke while driving at all

Could the oil being too thin have caused these issues, especially if stem seals are infact in need of changing?

It still gives a small puff on cold start so i know stem seals are still a factor, but cannot see any on overun now which is odd

I had the same issue on my BPU when using 10w30..

Switched to 10W50 and then 5w40, car was fine, just the odd puff here and there..

In my case, it was diagnosed as worn turbo seals, decatting the car as done with BPU shows this issue up..

Valve stem seals usually show themselves when the car is parked for some time, releasing a puff of smoke.

The 2JZ suffers with both of these issues as a common thing..
