Alex_GT
Probably a stupid question, but when BPU is completed, how much reliability is lost? I know every car will react differently, but are some models more susceptible to damage or failures from the BPU?
David P
As dangerous as an inexperienced right foot!
tony tt
My car took an awful lot of abuse at bpu. I haven't heard of anyone really that's had a failure at bpu levels on these cars if the correct steps are followed. 166k my car had done and 40k of that at bpu before I went single turbo at 166k now at 590hp. I don't see bpu having any reliability issues. Imo
Scott
You may only get around 1/2 a million miles out of the engine instead of the million or so that's generally expected. Tyres will take a pounding, as will fuel. Everything else will generally wear pretty much the same. If looked after the 2JZ is fairly bullet proof. Tired turbos are usually the first thing to go. Scooter
Saying that once you remove fuel cut and up the boost failures can be catastrophic so it needs all the right bits doing at once. As long as it's done properly then as Scott says all should be well for many thousands of miles.

rider
My car was BPU'd from near birth as I purchased the car when it was 2 years old and last time I checked it was still churning 340bhp at the drive wheels. As far as I'm aware, being a Jap import, its running the original ceramic turbos with 110,000 miles now covered. Engine is as sweet as the day I bought it and replacing the clutch plus fitting a new intercooler last year helped the straight line acceleration considerably. So expect the high mileage serviceable items to need attention well ahead of a BPU power unit.
