Talk me out of buying a R32 GTR

Pondering around Japfest today looking at the potential metal I can buy for my next toy and couldn't help but ignore an old flame, the R32 GTR.

Looked at a couple and thought nothing of it until I got chatting to one of the guys at Torque-GT who I've dealt with before. He mentioned they have a gunmetal grey one coming in with some nice bits and 56K miles on the clock. A customer bought it but had to back out of financial reasons and now the car is available again but I can actually view it in this country as it has just landed. Sounds perfect, looks great too in the pics.

I've always liked them but I've been spoiled by the Supras reliability and the fact I can repair most things on the Supra on my drive at home (engine swaps etc). The Skyline worries me as I read about oil pump issues, rebuilds, rust etc and they'e unknown to me i.e I've never worked on one.

Should I stop worrying and bite the bullet or am I likely to bankrupt myself?

Input appreciated :D

To be honest the looks of the car are my favourite bit. The Supras are great looking cars but the R32 GTR takes it up another notch in my eyes.

It's just all the talk of rebuilds that put me off and oil pump issues. I read a buyers guide earlier which reckons any example with 60-70K on will be about ready for an engine rebuild. I know the car from Torque GT will come with warranty for a few months but if it spins a shell after that I'm stuck with an expensive paper weight :D

In that case I would definitely go for it. There's no point in pondering what if. What if it turns out to be the most reliable R32 ever built? With a standard tune I would be very surprised if 70k saw an engine rebuild requirement.

I love the R32 GTR's

But I wouldn't choose one from a Supra. The 2JZ engine is a lot better than the RB26 engine in my opinion.

I also think the Supra is a more iconic car, especially over the R32... Not so much over the R34 though..

End of the day its totally up to you, but if im honest I think once you have owned it for a bi, that exciting feel of a new car has worn off t you may revert back to wanting a Supra.

I'm aiming for a GTR myself next but the R35, I'm in no rush though ;)

Depends in which way you mean iconic. The Supra has a nice motorsports pedigree, but it doesn't come close to that of the R32, which is legendary, and the greatest of all skylines in that regard.

From a tuning world perspective, I would say they're pretty evenly matched. The Japanese definitely favour the Skylines, where as the yank culture favors the Supra. I would say they are pretty evenly matched here, although I would also say that the R34 is held in higher regard.

Both great cars. The RB26 is an amazing engine, nowhere near as tough as the 2JZ but it sounds nicer and loves to rev. The 1JZ is a closer match IMO.

If you want to be put off, price up some spares. An uprated oil pump is an almost essential upgrade, and there's little change from £1k for a Tomie one

Oh, and like Supras, white is the correct colour for an R32

A very good point indeed, only live once and all that. I'm just trying to think relatively level headed I suppose but on those grounds I could talk myself out of buying any performance car :D

I still see it as a step backwards compared to a supra, well my supra anyway.

It probably is a backwards step but I've owned four Supras so far and I'm keen to try other cars. The Evo was an itch I had to scratch and I'm glad I got it out my system but it really wasn't for me.

I was chatting with Darren about your Supra yesterday, he seems to be as nice a chap in person as on the phone. Their NSX-R is a stunning piece of kit too.

I think I'm going to do exactly that, price up the costs of some of the parts and repairs to see how affordable they are/aren't. Buying the car is no problem, fuel is no problem either and likewise with insurance and servicing I guess, it's just the repairs.

R34 ftw

Fancy lending me another 20K? ;)

just drop a 2jz or 1jz into the R32

I would rather have a 240z :) with a modernized running gear

I also would love a 240Z but I don't want to undertake any large projects and most in my budget require restoration.

I owned a JUN built R32 as most on here know, it was a fantastic car and I miss it a lot, the way they put the power down is amazing and I really enjoyed the drive

Mine had a 2.7 Stroker engine with T04Z turbo kit and F Con V Pro

You're not helping :D

No seriously that's a great looking car. Did you have the engine work carried out?

I think I'm going to at least take a look/test drive the GTR in question I think :)

Nice. but not as nice as a supra. One day you will look at that after the novelty has worn of and youll say...not as nice as a supra.

I've bought and sold four Supras now, I have three friends locally also with Supras so I think it's time for a change. If I buy another Supra in the future, which I likely shall, it will probably be a single or a rolling shell and I'll build it up myself :)
