temperature , up and down

just got the car out gave it a good run , but the temp needle which normally is bang on in the middle , started to rise near the red , then drop back , im home now so will let it cool down , I thought it might be an air lock , so run the heater on max thinking that might shift it .

any sugestions , the rad is new

Is the rad cap new? This could be the issue

yes it is , had a new one when the rad was fitted , apart from a tottle round the estate last week this is the first decent run

Hoses connected up nice and tight? right type and amount of coolant?

yes checked all that only use Toyota red , just checked again and no leaks I can see

feel around the hoses and see if any are cold after letting the car warm up a bit, nice easy way to geta rough location of the problem.

 

THermostat is likely to blame if its old adn sticking

if its a after market rad cap scrap it, go with OEM

ok just went out and checked it and I needed to put about a litre in to top it up , but as said cant see any leaks , ill give it another go now and report back , ive got my old rad cap here so might pop that back on

could have a pin hole leak in one of the turbo or oil housing coolant pipes......I'd have a good look around the whole coolant run.

I vote rad cap as the first thing to check.

At idle do you hear any loud noises coming from the front of the engine? I had this after a good coolant flush, it turned out to be trapped air bubbles. My guess as you don't see any leak.

 

When changing the coolant, did you also open the engine block drain valve? How did you bleed the cooling circuit?

ok put the old cap back on and as said I topped it up with Toyota red , all seems ok , temp needle in the middle again , I didn't do the job on the rad replacement so couldn't say , fingers crossed its ok now .
