Correct automatic gearbox oil change procedure?

Morning folks. I'm about to get on my way to Toyota to collect an expensive bottle of type 4 ATF for the gearbox on my 1jz.

Now I'm new to this automatic lark although I'm pretty certain there's a proper procedure for draining filling and checking the level. Is this correct? Something like cycling through all the gears before doing anything to move the oil around the box.

Does this apply before draining?

Sure I've read somewhere too that once it's done you need to lift the car and have it running in gear with the wheels for a while before you put any strain on it. Does this need to be done only when changing the oil in the sump or only when doing a flush?

As you can see I'm clueless hahah, all the gear and no idea!:D

Box is a 4 speed I forget the code though.

Thanks guys.

Alan

It will be Dex 3 Im sure. But theres no way of telling, type 4 is just a synthetic version of Dex 3, looks the same, smells the same, feels the same.

All early 90s Toyota boxes are Dex3, US, UK JDM, (technically there are Dex 2 but Dex 3 is the direct replacement) There was a certain year they changed to type 4. My old Aristo (98) had type 4 in it. The drain plug is embossed with the symbol IV.

You'll need probably 8 litres to fully flush the box to use with type 4, whats that, about 100 quid? Or just get 5 litres of Dex 3 for 2o quid from Halfords ;)
