krisgowing
Alright lads, Gotta book my car in for a service shortly. But over the last weekend I've heard this horrible metal grinding noise when I'm going crawling in trafffic. It's not just when I'm braking but just when I'm crawling along its so loud and horrible. Not sure if something is rubbing maybe the disc on the wheel etc? Thanks 93' Supra NA Import Auto Edited May 7, 2015 by krisgowing (see edit history)
tooquicktostop
I would not wait for service, sounds serious, could be a brake issue or wheel bearing
The Raven
Brakes at a guess Two quick is right I would get it looked at asap
mattdavies
If you can feel grinding through the brake peddle then it is definitely brake related. When my EBC Red Pads de-lined there was a horrendous noise
Virus
Might be a stone chip between the dust shields & the rotor. I've had something similar a while back on my daily driver. Worth checking into

David P
Sounds like the brake wear indicators on the anti squeal shims are doing their job and telling you it is time for new pads.
krisgowing
Thanks, I'll call up my local garage when I finish from work. I thought it would be the pad but it's when I'm crawling alone in traffic etc.
supra_ufo
I had the same noise it was a wheel bearing on mine... sounded like metal on metal grinding, it was pretty bad
Pete
It could just be some grit stuck in there - I had this once, sounded dreadful.

Is that an easy fix or? May just have to take the wheel of and have a good look about! - - - Updated - - - It could just be some grit stuck in there - I had this once, sounded dreadful. At low speed? Only hear it around less than 10mph crawling in traffic
Dnk
Simple thing to do now is just jack that wheel up and spin it by hand listening for noise then hold at 12 and 6 and rock the wheel and at 3 and 9 to feel for play if its a bearing Do a visual check on the pads through the wheel if you can, also give the back plate a knock incase it is something stuck in there. I'd pop the wheel off for the time it takes and ease the pads off the disc if you still can't see anything obvious Edited May 7, 2015 by Dnk (see edit history)

I finish at five going to my mates garage as his a mechanic after work to get it up on the machine and have a look. Paul372
Could be the wear tags on the brake pads that would be the first thing I would check
Chris Wilson
Possibly a sticking caliper piston, or on Jap spec brakes, a sticking slider. Feel each wheel after a run and see if one is being heated up by the seized brake. It will probably need new pads after the seizure is repaired, if indeed this is what's happening. cered
Could be a few things: - Grit stuck on the pad surface - Disk has lipped and is rubbing against the pad sides (Likely on well worn pads/disks) - Caliper pistons are sitcky/seized (You may feel a 'tugging' feeling when you pull away slowly, as if you left the handbrake on lightly. Also your calipers will be pretty hot after a drive) - Caliper sliders/pins have dried up and need greasing. Common issue on my old MX5. Drove me nuts - Wear indicators on the pads (Metal clips designed to scrape against the disk when the pad is low) Best bet is to jack it up, wheel off and poke around. Check both sides of the disk and inspect the pads carefully. If you have EBC pads the compound has probably fallen off...

Your right it could be any of them haha, at least fingers crossed they aren't serious issues to worry about. Gonna get her up on the machine and have a proper look underneath and around aswell. What are ECB pads. Been a member here for a month and the amount of help I've got with my car is crazy, You guys are great !!

EBC pads are a popular brand of pads but have been know for the braking material to come away from the backing plate, it happened to me, I went from needing new pads in a couple of thousand miles to needing Pds and Discs immediately

Chris Wilson
I do a fast road compound that is quiet and no more dirty than a stock compound. It's well liked on here and I have sold dozens and dozens of sets, probably hundreds. I have stock if you are interested? £130 plus VAT a full car set for Jap spec brakes, with free insured P&P to UK post codes. Will split front or rear only, but would have to charge carriage. I'm beginning to think it might not apply to modern bearings? The test I do now is jack the wheel up and spin it with one hand while holding the suspension spring with the other. You can feel the pepper-grinder unpleasantness of a shagged bearing through the spring

krisgowing
Just got two new front pads and most of the noise has gone!! Slight little sound but that should go once the pads have worn in a bit. Everything else if fine but I need some new rear shocks so the hunt for those begin!
