Petrol protest drive

Okay,

The thought so far in order to make a few voices heard regarding the fuel price is to drive through london and go up to 10 down street and present a letter complaining about the cost of fuel.

While it might not make the blindest bit of difference at least we can say we tried and had our voices heard..

The date I have in mind is the 1st of October.

If there is interest in this ie I'm not going to be the only pillock doing then I will get hold of various press agencies and notify them of our intention.

Please note this is going to be a peaceful drive and no mucking about, after all we want it be above board so nothing can be questioned other than annoyance at the petrol prices..

So feel free to post a link to this thread on other boards and lets get it started.

I can't help feeling there's a certain irony about going on a protest drive about fuel prices...........

In addition, the level of duty that the Government imposes on fuel hasn't changed, it's just the price of crude at present which is pushing it up, so if you're going to protest to the government about the price of fuel then it must be on the basis of their level of taxation rather than the total price you're currently paying at the pump.

I appreciate the sentiments behind trying to organise something like this and it is admirable that you're actually making the effort, but you will be wasting your time.

The only way to 'protest' effectively is not to consume fuel in the first place, thus depriving both the manufacturers and the government of revenue.

Personally, I think motoring is still dirt cheap for the comfort and convenience it affords in comparison to public transport.

That is kinda the point really, to show we aren't sitting down and taking it...

Not an option for a lot of us, I need my car to get to work, as a consultant I work all over, and public transport isn't really an option for me..

But in order to drive down into London people will have to purchase fuel (at allegedly extortionate prices), so would that not be 'sitting down and taking it', albeit to make a point?

That's a fair point and there are also people who rely exclusively on a motor vehicle where there is no public transport available, for example.

However, if people are so passionate about the price of fuel then I believe that they would have to have the courage of their convinctions to make non-consumption an option, otherwise protesting whilst still consuming looks rather weak in my view.

Anyway, best of luck with it all. Too many people moan and don't do anything - at least you're having a go. :)

Have just posted this thread up on the Mazda rotary club forum.

Seems to be a big topic of conversation at the moment. Every forum i've been on is talking about it in some way, trying to come up with ideas about what could be done. Lets hope we can get something sorted, after all, it was only a couple of years ago that we had the last protests about the fuel price, and that was when it was going to go over 80 pence an litre!!

Im not knocking the idea of a protest and thanks Gav for doing something about it but I cant help feeling that turning up in a load of high powered "gas guzzling" cars will create some negitive press.

I think for this to work it needs a large cross section of joe public in his/her "normal" car

I'm sure Gav meant that this protest would include ALL the driving public,

and in any car they choose to use.

I dont think he was silly enough just to hope that everyone with High powered cars would turn up and rev there HKS's down the bottom of Downing St :).

So if you got a fiesta put your name up and get your moms and dads in there 1960 Anglias down there as well :).

So yeah, take a joe bloggs car...

Saturday was choosen as it is the 1st of the month, and also no congestion charge, no point in whinging about petrol prices just to pay the £5-odd for congestion charge as well...

Im up for this...I do think we should get the odd Mondao man and some classic cars too...everyone loves classic cars..and after all...'The Motor car' has always been an intrigal part of 'British' culture would be good to reflect that with a few classics!

One car club that would be good to get involved (and would really piss Blair off he he) is The Rover owners club!!!!!

We must also try and get someone to organise some banners and posters to go on the cars and maybe a downloadable logo...or slogan.

Also get some weird cars to come along...like the guy who drives around in a bed he he...that would grab the medias attention..little things like that are important.

Nice one Gav...count me in.

Si

P.S. the PMR446 radios will come in handy for this too
