V
I haven't used the Supe for a few months now (as we had our drive done which took months due to a couple of problems but anyway), but I did let the car idle 15 minutes now and then. Just took it for an MOT and they've just called to say its failing he emissions which its always passed no problems whatsoever. Its fully de-catted but they put no.2 back on for the test. I haven't got the first CAT. Its CO reading is 7.8% and I need 0.3% so its way off. Any thoughts of a sudden failure please? Car starts instantly and runs great still. Thank you. Ric
They have carried out a CAT test on your car. It should not have a CAT test, they've tested your car wrongly afaik. Im sure other people will comment with more info, Benjy mostly.
Scooter
blast from the past! 'may be' the recent idling has just fouled the plugs/cat a bit and an Italian tune up is required?
V
Thanks Ric. Why shouldn't it have a CAT test? I was assuming its Oxygen sensor, but didn't know if there was a way of easily telling if that was the problem? Hi Scooter, yes just been lurking.... Its sunny now:D
Benjy
7.8% is way out no matter what test it gets.
garethr
You won't get away without a cat test on a car manufactured in 1999/2000. http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/index.htm Other than checking that the oxygen sensor (lambda) is working, giving it an Italian tune-up , and making sure the cat is good and hot, I have no suggestions on actually fixing the problem, though. EDIT: Too slow with the Italian tune-up suggestion.
Ric
I think this is the document they should follow: http://imageshack.us/a/img404/7559/picture1sf.jpg But, even this document shows 3.5% for a none cat test, so perhaps 7% is a bit high... It doesn't matter if it's a 2000 if they CANNOT find an EXACT match on the emissions database, which i understand no supra does?? Failing that, could be lambda. V
Ok, ta. Its been running for 45 minutes trying to get it hot and still no good. Being that far out do you reckon them giving it some will make enough difference?
V
Do you think the problem is limited to either a knackered/clogged CAT or duff Oxygen Sensor (89465-19725 J-spec TT VVTi)? I'll let them boot it up and down the road a bit other wise try a new Oxygen Sensor?
Pudsey
Sorry to hear your having problems. I once had a vvti that we tried to mot being fully decatted, and it would not pass with no cats, neither with just second in, but when the first was also put back in passed easy. Very interesting what Ric is saying as judging by that it means no Supra should have a cat test.
Ric
Very interesting what Ric is saying as judging by that it means no Supra should have a cat test. Any supra which does not have a exact match in the database, I expect a UK supra might, but it's not exact for a Jspec or VVTI, im sure the MOT testers on here can clarify. Usually any issues are a MOT tester just using anything they find regarding a supra, but it's not an exact match. I had my last Supra's MOT's with no cats and they passed fine. V
Even with or without CATs mines still way off. I've told them to get a new O2 sensor and see what happens. That'll be its first replacement since new, so its done ok! (fingers crossed)

Benjy
That's unlikely to be cat or lambda related. My suggestion would be check the engine coolant temp sensor, or maybe check for an air leak. 7.8% is massively high. On a FIRST USED in 2000 car, it will need to pass a 0.30% CO Cat test. V
Cheers Benjy, I've told the garage to go over the car again thoroughly and triple check for any leaks. Then look in to the temp gauges.
V
Sounds like it might the bloody test centres equipment!! They had 3 cars fail one after each other, and then thought it might be their machine which was faulty as they just had their sensor replaced. They changed their sensor for another new one and hey presto, they all passed! Mines getting done again in the morning!! A right PITA. If it was the engine coolant temp sensor I think it would struggle starting when its hot, but it starts and runs perfectly, so fingers crossed. The-Plethora
Ah good news then I usually arrive with my 2nd cat fitted inside my boot, technically its on the car.
V
Err, not good news. Still not passing. CO: 0.776 (need 0.3) - and not 7.8% as they originally said! Lambda: 1.029 (pass) Hydrocarbon: 44 (pass) They cant find any air leaks. I've asked them to check the 02 sensor, but do think that's probably the culprit? Benjy
Might be worth checking for fault codes, could potentially be a cat.

secondjump
Hi V, if you need to borrow another 2nd cat your welcome to use mine. I used it for an mot only last Saturday, so know it's a good. Err, not good news. Still not passing. CO: 0.776 (need 0.3) - and not 7.8% as they originally said! Lambda: 1.029 (pass) Hydrocarbon: 44 (pass) They cant find any air leaks. Guest pgill40
Use another test center. One that will use another car to pass your emissions. :-)
