Big Mark
I used to connect my old company laptop via HDMI to the girlfriends tv and watch downloaded films, stream from websites such as Afdah and watch youtube, (Street Outlaws), but I've changed jobs and security on the new laptop is such that I'm not going to risk it. Can soneone recommend what's the cheapest device that will be able to meet my needs: A. download films to a harddrive B. play films from USB devices C. Stream from various websites including Afdah and Youtube? I've got a pc at mine and girlfriend also has a work laptop and ipad so I really don't want to get a laptop unless I have to. Hitbox Junkie
Notebook (small laptop) there not power full but great for surfing and doing what you want. A laptop/Ipad combo thing (sorry forgotten what they are called)
JasonR24
You should be able to get a nice cheapish tablet with a usb slot.
Big Mark
But how do I connect a tablet to the tv? TV only has hdmi inputs?
Abz
I would personally recommend a Raspberry Pi. Sounds like it could be the home theatre setup you are looking for. Only £30 too. http://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-2-model-b/

Supra.SZ-R
What is it? I've heard of it before but know nothing about them. Since I moved to Switzerland last year I had left behind my Computer and all, so I said I'd buy one of them big fancy phones that do all, Bought the Sony Z1 new, and it does all this connect it to the TV all the time for movies, has 16g internal and 64g card And to be honest I have never had a better device for longevity, still super fast, holds charge and take a serious beating with my physical line of work, never seen anything as solid! They started out as hobbyist devices to help children to learn to program. You plug in your own hard disk, monitor, keyboard and mouse. They're cheap, small and fairly capable, but not an out-of-the-box solution. Until now, you had to install something like Linux on them, and it's this sort of thing coupled with the need to source and set up your own peripherals (OK, not hard with basic stuff like a keyboard, but less trivial with hard disks) that still makes them hobbyist devices IMO. I've heard that the latest model can run Windows (not sure which version), but you still need to be a tinkerer in order to make it worthwhile. I loathe phones, especially smart phones and also not a fan of tablets. I like buttons and key and simple things.
Big Mark
Temporary solution found. Got an Apple Lightning AV connector thingy so that the girlfriend can plug her phone into her tv. Can't download but let's us stream films ok.
