nihontoman
Hello guys. I really didn't think I would need to create this thread, BUT searching the forums didn't result in any threads specifically for Engine oil recommendations/discussions. (If there is one, and I didn't notice, please accept my apologies). To start it out, my philosophy on engine oil is something like this: 1 - You don't cheap out when it comes to engine oil and price should not really be a concern (within reasonable limits); 2 - You change the oil in every 5000km (sometimes even less), especially if the engine has been modified for higher power output; 3 - Manufacturers recommended grade is great and all, but I'm pretty sure the manufacturer didn't really consider that a car made for a certain market would be sold in other countries, with different kinds of climates. Therefore, I don't really trust the "hot index" of recommended oils. I've seen suggestions on 10w-30 for Supras. Heck, some newer Toyotas come with 0w-20 oils. wouldn't it be reasonable to expect that 0w-20 will be working uncomfortably close to it's limits in climates where temperature is close to 40-45 Celsius? Same thing goes for supra, IMO 10w-30 is too thin for hot climates. maybe it is ok for northern Japan or English climates but not here. I wouldn't dare put anything less then 40 "hot index" in my evo, heck I don't put anything less even in my bone stock Suzuki swift sport, which, mind you, is a 1.6 NA with measly 125hp Regardless, I'd still like some advice on engine oil for single turbo supra (probably 500-600hp range), because you people know more than me when it comes to Supras and I value practical knowledge and experience more than pure theory : Things to consider before giving recommendations: 1) It is not stock. it is a single turbo (HKS t04S). from what I could understand from a Japanese auction paper, some modifications have been made to engine too, bigger injectors and some bits have been added. Not sure if aftermarket oil cooler is present though... (edit: There indeed is an oil cooler installed on the car) 2) It will run in hot climate. soon the temperature here will reach 35+ Celsius, close to 40-45. 3) There are four "good" oil brands from which I can choose from - Castrol, Shell, Mobil 1 and Motul. We don't have Royal Purple here I was thinking something along the lines of Castrol Edge 10W-60 or Maybe Motul 300V 5W-40 (not sure about the cold index). thanks in advance for the help Edited April 4, 2015 by nihontoman (see edit history)
David P
If it gets hot, changing the viscosity won't help, fit an oil cooler.
nihontoman
If it gets hot, changing the viscosity won't help, fit an oil cooler. Sorry for the confusion. it seems that it does have oil cooler. here is a picture: ^The thing in the red outline reads Oil Cooler. Not sure why I didn't notice it earlier... anyways, the question still remains - which brand and more importantly what grade of oil should I go after? See, the thing is, I owned a low mileage (~100k kilometers) Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution, which had a 3.5 Mivec engine (280 HP) and it also had a big healthy oil cooler from the factory (no wonder, that thing is a beast meant for hot deserts). It came with newly changed 5w-30 (don't know which brand) from japan. During summer, oil pressure level sometimes dropped to about 0.5 bar. I soon changed the oil to Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10W-60 and never had any problems with oil pressure, even when pushed to it's limits (I did that a lot, almost every day ). This is why I'm being cautious with thinner oils, regardless of the presence of oil coolers. That is the reason that I have Motul 300v 15W-50 in Lancer Evolution 7 which has been slightly tuned (about 300WHP). Any thoughts on this? Chris Bailey
Fit an oil cooler, 10w 60 oil is ideal for a single turbo supra.
nihontoman
Fit an oil cooler, 10w 60 oil is ideal for a single turbo supra. thanks for the suggestion. It already has an oil cooler though as already mentioned in the third post (sorry, I should edit the first post). Any preferences towards the brand? I think I could get either Castrol Edge or Shell Helix Ultra Racing in that "flavor" which one should I go for from these two? Castrol livery does look good on supra, but I don't think that's the smartest thing to base my decision on

Chris Bailey
We have Opie oils here on the forum, they might ship to Georgia.
nihontoman
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-662-10w-60.aspx just looked through their site and couldn't find opie branded oil. there is millers but will it be worth it over Castrol edge? Castrol Edge 10w-60 is something like 6-7 pounds per litre here, doesn't need shipping AND there will be no waiting for it
