Scutch0
So I'm changing the timing belt tomorrow, and having looked at the supra tsrm app it states about timing marks on both the cam pulleys and on the timing belt 'cover' is this the case for the 2jz-ge as well as the gte? And shall I use a cam locking tool? Or do the cams generally not move when the tension is released? Any othe tips would be great!
pedrosixfour
Marks are the same, no need for locking tool.
Scutch0
Excellent. Thanks for the info!
Scooter
Back when I was a first timer I mole gripped the cam wheels together in the middle where the are closest (foam either side and only very light clamping pressure) to stop any movement but it's not really necessary. All I would advise is straight after fitting and tensioning fit the crank bolt and use your socket to turn the engine over (clockwise ie normal way) to check the marks all line up after a full crank revolution. Scutch0
Got it sorted, wasn't actually as bad as I thought it was gonna be tbh.
mattdavies
To revive the thread. I need to change my timing belt soon, the car is approaching 120,000 miles. In peoples experience do the tensioner pulleys and/or the tensioner itself fail often ? If they are good when I replace the belt will they last another 60k miles or 5 years ? Ric
If it's off, and they've not been changed already, just do it. You can get a belt, tensioner and pulley kit for around £130, genuine Toyota. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-OEM-Timing-Belt-Kit-Toyota-2JZ-GTE-Supra-MKIV-Lexus-IS300-GS300-/252026863887?fits=Model%3ASupra&hash=item3aadf8c10f:g:ttEAAOSwu4BVpO-p They only have one left at that price, it's over £190 from TCB parts, probably more from Toyota themselves. I was hoping someone would save me some money by saying that a belt will be fine Oh well... Have ordered that now.

Well a belt would have been fine.. But if you've got access to all the parts and actually need to take them off, why not replace them? Rather than risking a 20year old part (not been swapped before)
