Scutch0
Hi guys, need a bit of advice. I've started to notice a slight squeal when I start the supra and also blip the throttle. Initially I assumed the aux belt was just worn however it still does it after I've replaced it. After doing a search on here a lot of people have been talking about crank pulley issues, my question is how can I diagnose this? And is it just a case of replacing the bottom crank pulley or does anything else need changing? It is due a timing belt change very soon so I'll probably get my mechanic to do this at the same time, or I'll have a go at it myself. Scutch0
Also if a replacement is needed, are these lightweight sets a worthy replacement? As I dread to think what mr T is gonna charge me for one!
Samurai 20V
Do the tippex test on the pulley.. Run a tippex line from the centre of the pulley till the edge, if the line doesn't line up after running the engine, you know the pulley is stuffed.. Stevo
As above, try that test. If you do need a replacement, I'd stick with an OEM part though as they are harmonically balanced correctly; unless you're running big power and can afford something like a Titan crank pulley. No need to go to Toyota - try whifbitz on here or tcbparts.co.uk
Dnk
This one shows the tipex test
Scooter
Also if a replacement is needed, are these lightweight sets a worthy replacement? As I dread to think what mr T is gonna charge me for one! At the very least get the ones on eBay for £100-120 these are almost the same as stock. They don't have the balancing dimples you can see on the tipped test one pictured above though. I'd rather a stock used pulley than a solid alloy one.
Dnk
Some parts you just dont take chances on in my opinion, new OE cp is the way forward, toyo diy is possibly the cheapest, any part being fitted to the crank should be balanced
Scutch0
Ok that's a bit clearer now, I'll do the test when I get a minute, can anyone link me up to somewhere to get a replacement? I've tried both of the above websites but all I can find is the oem one on whifbitz for £
Scutch0
So if I was to get a used part how can I tell if it's in ok condition? Do these crack or something? I've never come across this on any of my other cars so I'm just trying to understand what happens to it.
Stevo
We'll I've just found them on tcb parts for £198.57 + vat. Look in the engine parts section then select 'supra' and scroll down. Russian roulette with buying used if you ask me. Could last you years or could give up within weeks/months The damage caused by the crank pulley failing whilst driving will be more expensive than the cost of a new one! You seriously do not want one of them bouncing around the engine bay. Equally the pulley could find its way out of the bay and cause bodywork damage to the car or even others behind you! Stevo
There is an inner and outer part of the pulley and if the rubber between the two perishes enough, the inner one stays attached to the block via the bolt, but the outer one that the belt goes round just goes walkabout in your engine bay. Guest Budz86
I have a used OEM one with less than 10k on it I'm selling. Very good condition, just needed an uprated one for my build. Only fitted this roughly 18 months ago. Looking for 180 plus postage
