r2ck_p
Hi guys, wanted to confirm if this information is correct. I spoke to my local Toyota this morning regarding my 96 Auto Supra TT (JDM) as I am looking at doing a gearbox oil change, whilst also changing the gearbox oil pan strainer and gearbox oil pan gasket. However Toyota have told me the following:- 1) There is no gearbox oil pan gasket showing on the system, so it must just be a paste sealer 2) The gearbox oil is just regular Auto Transmission Fluid, which is Dexron III Please can someone confirm the above is correct as I was under the impression there was a gasket for the gearbox oil pan and also it was special gearbox oil required, not just regular ATF. If anyone has part numbers of the gasket if it exists or part number for the oil it would be appreciated. Thanks
Scooter
1) is correct but that filter I linked to has a cork gasket to reseal if required/desired 2) I've always read it should be Toyota type iv....but then the dipstick on prefacelifts i'm sure states TypeII (was type iv around in 1993?). I did some research and have 2l's of Mobil 3309 which is a Type IV equivalent (not used yet but confident it is good to put in)
np89
I was always told Type IV and nothing else - - - Updated - - - And I think the cork gasket comes with the new filter kit
r2ck_p
Looked in to Type IV, seems like it is what is supposed to be used. I believe the part number is 08886-82025. Any idea how much I will need to order if I want to do a proper gearbox change/flush. The chap at Toyota parts said there was nothing showing on the exploded diagram of any kind of gasket which would make sense if the cork gasket comes with the strainer. np89
To do a full flush you need 10 litres
np89
Although the box only holds 8, by the time you get it through etc

np89
I think the general consensus is that unless there is something wrong you shudnt do a full flush like if the fluid isnt burnt a normal chance will be ok but if you've no idea when the last time it was done was I'd change it
1_Tidy_1
Should do the auto tranny every year to 2 years say 25 k orso to ensure good operation and longevity, and if you change filter change all the oil go to a proper shop and get it flushed. Otherwise dont even bother you will be wasting you time.
bebby
I've just done this job, there is no gasket around the sump you need to use sealing paste and the strainer is simply 3 bolts to come off. That comes with all the gaskets attached. I'd definately stick with type iv oil. It's a little pricy at around £50-70 for 5 litres Hope that helps
jumpbike
I've not had an issue with Dex-III, if you look at other Toyota models that use the same series of box some say type iv some say Dex-III, they are all near identical inside. I know I've got a TT supra box hybrid with a land cruiser box. I think the gaskets come from aftermarket suppliers, Toyota use sealant from the factory, I've never had a problem just using generic sump/water pump silicone

My car is going in to Toyota in 2 weeks but not sure what to tell them to do, just swap the oil in the sump or replace it all. It has a small leak on the seal around the pan so that's the only reason for the change. Some are saving don't bother changing your filter/strainer unless your replacing all the ATF. Thoughts anyone? I changed what I had in the sump but purely because my gears were slipping when moving off, and I heard many stories of changing the whole lot can damage the clutch packs, After changing I had a massive improvement so I think just removing sump is enough
