fastnfurious
need some advise for my buddy's Supra MKIV. took me for a spin in his single turbo auto Supra MKIV this afternoon and the rear wheels seem to wobble when boost kicks in, is this normal? currently running on 18x9.5 +35 all around, using 245/40 front and 265/40 rear setup. all shocks and rear anti-roll bar (comes with new bushes) recently replaced, 18" wheels are new with the correct centre cone installed... so wonder what could have gone wrong causing the rear to wobble? TRAC has been disabled (TRC light ON, O/D light flashing) by removing the connector and fuse. surprisingly, when going uphill, this wobbling problem seems absent or perhaps due to weight distribution? hope you guys could assist to sort out this problem quickly as the ride is pretty scary at the moment especially on uneven road or during wet days... thanks so much! tony tt
Have you checked the wheel bearings?

fastnfurious
upper arm bushes have slight hairline crack but not major. will this be the culprit? wheel bearing seems ok and no wooing wooing noise while rotating the wheels on situ... clay
The rear top arms have a metal and steel bush bonded together. Over time they come apart . you will only realy see what i meen if you take the arms off.
Luxluc
Are all the bolts tightened ?
Dnk
I'd be changing the arms that have cracks in and at the same time get it on a ramp and go over the back end checking everything, shocks, springs, wheel bearings, subframe bolts, suspension bushes for play, etc etc
np89
Might as well do a full suspension refresh if funds allow, big job but would be some car when its done! Im currently doing mine, can't wait to feel what a fresh set of bushes and coilovers feels like to drive on, and the steering refreshed!! Dnk
Check the wheel nuts first, i went to check a supra with a clonk and a wobble a while ago, turned out to be all the wheel nuts on one wheel were loose and one stud had sheared off. I couldn't quite believe what i was seeing to be honest If they're ok then with the wheel off the ground rotate it and listen for nasty noises, then hold it at 3 & 9 and try to feel for play by pulling and pushing then do the same holding the wheel at 12 & 6, best to do this on a ramp so another person can look at all the suspension bushes and hold them too feel for any play while you rock the wheel Edited March 18, 2015 by Dnk (see edit history)
Iky
Does it have spacers on?
heckler
how do you know the wheels are wobbling? does it pull one direction when on boost, then the other when off throttle?
fastnfurious
yupp, when the boost kicks in and when throttle off... the rear seems dancing and scary! no spacers on the wheels, only centre cones installed to give the aftermarket wheels tight fitment. jonc
Might as well do a full suspension refresh if funds allow, big job but would be some car when its done! Im currently doing mine, can't wait to feel what a fresh set of bushes and coilovers feels like to drive on, and the steering refreshed!! This with a full geo set up at the end. Suspension will be shot on most older Supra's by now. You will see an immediate difference after the work:thumbs:
gdog1989
Mine was due to an extremely worn wheel bearing being knackered, when it went in for geo they put it on the ramp and the wheel dropped it was that bad, hope this helps.
Chris Wilson
You need to be a lot more specific in your description of what the car is doing. A *LOT* clearer, I have no real idea what you are witnessing. But I will ask what make of tyres has the car got on it, and what dampers? Is it lowered? If so how much? What are the rear geo settings that have been used?
mellonman
I had a similar thing which was a wheel bearing , It didnt make a noise but had lots of play
fastnfurious
UPDATES! accompanied my buddy to the workshop this morning and finally found the culprit which causes the rear end to wobble when boost kicks in. apparently, the RH rear lower arm seems to be having extensive free-play at the ball-joint section when shaking the wheel hard. since this section can't be fixed/repaired, will proceed to order new replacement parts (2 x 48710-14110) from Toyota. fyi, the wheel bearings are in tiptop condition as it feels very firm. also spotted the LH differential cushion in poor condition and will order both LH and RH replacement parts (41651-14010 & 41651-14020) as well. do we need a press to remove/install the differential cushion or can it be done on-situ? thanks to everyone for the awesome response and guidance, it's much appreciated. cheers~ Edited March 21, 2015 by fastnfurious (see edit history)
