Homer
Unfortunately one of the rear shocks has started knocking, since these are very old shocks and no longer available I'd like some advice on what to do... I can imagine a repair will be quite expensive as it'd be a custom job and these units are not the best to begin with. It's on my silver NA which I only wish to keep useable as a daily hack so do not want to spent a load of cash on an entire new suspension kit. Do any of you know if these old units can be fixed? Or any alternatives for a suitable cheap replacement apart from going back to stock?
Timlowthian
I contacted Tein regarding rebuilding the HA coilovers I have. They actually confirmed they could still rebuild them but was around £200 per corner and recommended all were done at the same time. You can buy a new set of coilovers for the same price so didn't bother myself.
Chris Wilson
My advice is not to buy this stuff in the first place, internally they are, IMO, stone age technology, using low quality materials. The "innards" of a Bilstein Sport damper is head and shoulders superior, and they very rarely give any issues at all. If you are hell bent on threaded height adjustment (and as it ages it's a total PITA as it WILL seize up), the entry level is probably Nitron to get anything half decent. It's certainly not worth even thinking about getting your Teins rebuilt.
Homer
Chris, I would never buy it in the first place, this is just what was on the car when I got it. I actually quite like how it handles regardless of how cr*p they are on paper. So, the best option on this car is to replace the lot? Quite honestly, that would almost write the car off... Are there really shock kits out there for less than £200? Last time I looked at Bilsteins they were closer to £600 for a set which I could never justify on this car. Chris Wilson
Not saying Bilsteins are cheaper than £20 a set, new Bilstein Sports are £120 plus VAT each. I probably have some used shocks with life in them, but sold without any warranty stated or implied
garethr
KYB (Kayaba) shocks are about 55 quid a corner. They wouldn't be as good as CW's Bilsteins, but Kayaba are OEM suppliers, so they aren't rubbish.
Graham1984
I got a full set of 2nd hand Bilsteins and springs off here for under £200, could not fault the shocks at all. There must be something in the for sale section to keep you going?
Graham1984
An old thread but you never know http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?307219-eiback-lowering-springs-and-bilstein-shocks&highlight=shocks
Homer
Thanks all. I've sent a PM to Keron to see what he has. It's only to keep the car going until I get the TT on the road so can't justify a spend on new stuff.
j_jza80
The stock stuff from mine will be going up for sale in a couple of weeks. The car has circa 75k on it and it was a fresh import in October, so it should all still be pretty good.
