walkerstrider
Keep getting 4 lights appear on my 94 na j spec. The battery symbol the one to the right of it the orange exclamation mark and the oil light. There are no other obvious problems like lack of power electrical or mechanical. They do seem to go off under harsh acceleration but then come on again a few minutes later. Any ideas what this could be?
Morzy2k5
I would check the basics first like all earth points.they are known for having dry solder joints on that little circuit board also so you might want to check that out aswell where the oil light is etc.
walkerstrider
Cheers mate, cant see anything obvious. Drove 27 miles down to work this morning no warning lights. About 5 mins into the journey home they came on again. Doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to why they keep doing it. Im at a loss. walkerstrider
Belt looks fine, theres no slipping noise. How do I check the crank pulley?
Slam
Alternator
trebor69
Belt looks fine, theres no slipping noise. How do I check the crank pulley? Tipex line down the pulley then run it and keep an eye on the line separating/moving.
Digsy
Definitely alternator symptoms, except you say you've changed it out already. The lights I had when mine went were oil level (yellow light) first, (went out wen revs increased). Then catalyst temperature, then ABS warning and last of all the actual alternator / battery light. Al Massey
Do the tipex test straight away. My money is on that
walkerstrider
Cheers guys, got a feeling it might be the crank pulley. Had the car 18 months and it's always had a strange noise on tickover like a skimming noise. Seems to be coming from this area, goes when revs are raised so gonna change it anyway. Hopefully it will sort it.
Al Massey
Do a tipex test first Otherwise you're spending money and time for nothing
walkerstrider
OK just done the tippex test. Warmed car up and had a look but the line hasn't budged! Lights are still on. Battery light, cat light, orange exclamation box and oil can with squiggly line. All at once. Chris Wilson
Measure the battery voltage with plenty of electric stuff turned on, at a fast idle. Should be circa 13.8V
walkerstrider
Not got a voltmeter but I do have a spare battery which im gonna try once ive put some charge in it
walkerstrider
Well turns out my spare battery was knackered so I went and bought a volt meter. With everything on it read 11.12. With everything turned off it read 11.48. This was on tickover. I'm assuming I need a new battery?

I had problems with poor connections in the past that appeared to be battery but was actually a poor connection...

Raised idle speed and it dropped to 11.
Chris Wilson
No, you need a new alternator, or the alternator wiring is faulty.
walkerstrider
Recently changed the alternator, was fine for couple of weeks but it was quite oily and ive noticed an oil leak around the distributor which looks like its dripping straight into the 3 pin plug on top of the alternator. Tried to wipe it out but hasnt made any difference.
Slam
Have you done a test on alternator.

walkerstrider
Ive also checked the condition of the 120 amp fuse which doesnt look too good. The plastic covers missing and the arched terminal inside looks all white and crusty. Could this be a cause?
walkerstrider
Just a quick update, after breaking down on the way to work and having to use a ford garage of all places! Had the alternator test and it turns out the alternator failed for a second time! Thanks for all the input tho, its always appreciated.
