ianhid
Purely anecdotal, my TT auto was doing about 12-15mpg before swapping the O2 sensor a month ago, I'm now getting 22-27mpg depending on driving conditions. Worth considering, as you might get the money back in a couple tanks of fuel and worst case have a brand new sensor to last another 60k miles. It's also a pretty simple job to do yourself if it's not seized solid.
cered
Update for this for reference with anyone with similar issues Replaced the o2 sensor and was getting about 19.5mpg (slightly better but it was already at late 18s early 19s) got new plugs in now and a new fuel filter to go in and it seems to be getting better mpg, will see when i drain it Still has a pretty strong petrol smell and carbon on the inside of the exhaust but that might just be how it is. Starting to think the issue is based in my head rather than the car! curiously I've noticed no change in economy or performance/running between V-Power Nitro+ 99 or BP Ultimate 97 or even Texaco Premium

AndyJax
I've managed 380 miles out of a tank whilst driving to Cornwall and that was with a fully loaded boot and the Wife !!!!!
robin
it varies massively depending on driving style/type. My worst tanks have been about 13mpg with all town driving in heavy winter traffic. commuting 30 miles each way with a mix of town and country driving I manage about 20-25mpg depending on how sensible I am. On a longer run without breaking any speed limits the best I have managed is 33.6mpg All on a UK car with over 200k miles on the clock. A few years ago I bought brand new o2 sensors hoping it would make a difference but didn't really notice any.

Mk4Gaz
I've just replaced my fuel feed and return lines, they were rotten! Definitely worth taking a look under the car. I couldn't smell fuel, but the plastic cover that protects the fuel/brake lines, was slightly wet - which was the tell tale sign!
GreaseMonkey
Maybe another thing to check possibly Airflow Meter (located on pipe out of the back of the Airbox), slightly dusty/ dirty?, impairing Intake Air temps and Air speed readings. http://my.prostreetonline.com/2013/11/20/how-to-test-your-2jz-mass-airflow-sensor/ Edited March 15, 2016 by GreaseMonkey (see edit history)

Mk4Gaz
Mine was dripping on the exhaust from the return line Ouch! Mine was the feed line, under the rear seat area. The return line looked pretty shot too, so I ripped them both out, and replaced with braided lines.
Annabella
Yep they aren't going to rust again, waxy oiled the brake lines too in that dodgy bleeding area. Rest of the lines are fine, just under that plastic cover that screws them up.
cered
Didn't even think of the MAF, will give it a blast with brake cleaner when it's sunny again. Quite nervous about riving it now... but haven't seen any drips of fuel or brake fluid so might just be rusty but not leaking. I saw a pic - two copper (?) lines anda rubber hose line... Are the metal pipes the fuel line & return?
Annabella
There are three metal pipes (unless already been replaced) 1 brake, 1 fuel feed and 1 fuel return, worth taking the bracket off and have a look anyway...
cered
Just had a look... No rust to the pipes... Just a lot of dirt falling onto my face after taking the plastic cover off
