Diff drive shaft flange help

Recommended Posts

Ok bit of a long story and pics to follow, but I have a NA that I'm refreshing and generally having a tinker with.

I removed the diff as I've had a trd one (from ebay) in the garage for some time and I also wanted to find out what LSD was currently in the car. Anyhow on comparison the diff casings are identical, but the drive shaft flanges aren't so it's overall a bit narrower and also the trd one has larger bolt holes for the driveshafts ie my na bolts just slide in the holes.

I think all small case diff's from supras are interchangeable bar the prop flange? So I'm wondering if anyone knows what it may have come from?

The diff that came out has in and out play in one side bearing and so I'm looking for advice on whether to rebuild this non trd one as it has the correct drive shaft flanges and sell the trd once I know what car it's from. Or perhaps get the trd rebuilt with the correct drive shaft flanges?

Pics of the TRD internaled 'other' diff. As I said all looks identical casing wise (see pic?), I measured the prop flange and that's standard NA sizing too, it's just these drive shaft flanges that are different.....any help appreciated.

NB in the side by side pic the right hand side one is the one direct off the NA today, the left the ebay purchased mystery diff.

David, with the flange bolts to the casing undone should the flanges just pull out? I loosened one and got a small gap but was giving up for the day so didn't try 'much' persuasion and was worried about disturbing the side seals.

Ok I've read the manual, not sure why I didn't look before! They 'just' pull off do that's my job for tomorrow evening.....

Confirm that the diff is the ratio you require.

If you don't know what it is............

Lock one side, turn prop flange and count how many prop revolutions = 1 wheel revolution.

That will get you close enough to identify it from the Supra diff ratios available.

thanks David, when I first got it I checked a trd was inside, I checked the prop flange size as I knew these were different NA to TT and I did count the teeth to ascertain the ratio which I'm sure (but i'll double check before resealing!) was the NA ratios and so given all this pointing to a normal NA diff and that it was sold on ebay as a supra diff I completely overlooked/didn't think to even check the driveshaft flange holes....typical but all part of the learning curve - check everything!
