Have you checked all your folders in Outlook for unread messages? If its not that than I'm out of ideas! Could be MSN related...

the thing that is pissing me off is that i have MCP qualifications in 2000 and 2000 server and i'm going for MCSE/MCSA exams too :complain: so as you can imagine i'm at   stage :complain:

Download and install TweakUI:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI) For Systems With SP1 Installed:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI) For Systems WithOUT SP1 Installed:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

After installing, go to Start | Programs | PowerToys for Windows XP | TweakUI. Expand "Logon" and uncheck "Show unread mail on Welcome screen".

Note: Unread message alerts may indicate you have unread messages not only in Outlook Express, but Hotmail and/or MSN email accounts as well.

Or if you do not want to use TweakUI

Disable the Unread Mail Message on the Welcome Screen (Windows XP)

Category: Home > Windows > Login and Authentication

This setting can be used to remove the message on the Windows Welcome screen showing the number of unread e-mails.

Open your registry and find the key below. You may need to create the key if it does not already exist.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'MessageExpiryDays' and edit the value according to the settings below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

MessageExpiryDays REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\...

Registry Settings

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersionUnreadMail]

Value Name: MessageExpiryDays

Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)

Value Data: (0 = disabled, 3 = default)

It can happen with quite a few e mail clients like Hotmail or even AOL

This e-mail hyperlink is only displayed if the e-mail client that your computer is running populates the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

It is quite easy to fix though..

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit). (go to Windows Start menu/run then type in "regedit" without the quotes)

2. Navigate to the following folder in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

3. Right-click the UnreadMail folder, and then click Permissions.

4. Click the System account, and then clck to select the Deny check box for Full Control.

5. Click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.

How many users are set up on that laptop?

If the message is appearing before you type your logon it could be that it's for the "default" account.

as its the only thing no one else gets near...i.e the mrs who says yes to any block that zone alarms stops and continues with any virus alert...need i say more :complain:
