Exhast Flange, cut it off or just weld on top of it?

I've got an HKS Ti exhaust system. The PITA with this system is that the mating flange for the Vband is a different size from the standard vband flanges you get.

I've got the correct size one now, but I'm unsure of how to go about welding it. I could cut off the current flange and then weld on the new one, but this may bring in alignment issues. I was wondering if it would be OK to simply weld the new one on top of the old one?

Is this a silly idea or should this be OK? I'm just thinking that the HKS adapter flange would make the exhaust stick out a couple of inches extra, so a half inch wouldn't really make a difference.

I was also considering turning down the weld on end of the new flange so that there was less of a difference in height again. I wouldn't be able to go too far though as the vband clamp would possibly foul on the weld.

Picture for reference....
