Andrew
Having a bit of a job trying to remove the oil filter, in the manual it shows a tool called an SST being used. Can the filter be undone by hand? Thought I'd ask before I have an hernia. Thanks, Andrew.
Guest Martin F
Well you should be able to remove it by hand. But every so often somebody overtightens their filter and with the natural expansion and contraction of the engine warming up and cooling down things get even tighter. In which case you will most likely need some sort of removal tool to get the thing started. You don't need a specific Toyota SST you can use any generic oil filter removal tool from Halfrauds, but i would recommend one that fits on the end of the filter. DO NOT use the tool to tighten the new filter when replacing.
Andrew
Thanks for the quick reply Martin. Seems it's not going to budge, so I'll have to buy one.
Ian C
Having fought with the MkIII oil filter (designed by Beelzebub himself) and the MkIV, I've finally found a decent oil filter remover tool. It's in Halfords, about £15, the one that has a metal strip loop and a knob you tighten up to grip the filter. Crap description, but you'll know the one I mean when you see it. You can easily attach it and do it up, and there is enough room in the engine bay to use it. Hand tight, I laugh at you. My Ford garage uses the "Oil-filter-o-matic 1000" that tightens the damn thing on until the car creaks on it's suspension due to the torque, I swear to God. They know I do the interim change, and they get to undo my hand-tight filter with the greatest of ease. Bastards. -Ian

Terminator
Only three times:eek: I tighten my filter by hand according to the book, but use a strap wrench to undo it.
Piran
on older cars I found ramming a screwdriver into the oil filter and then using that to twist it off worked a treat !

Dont do it! some oil filters have presure release valves in them, when you ram the screwdrive into the filter it can break the valve off causing it to drop into the oil way ! I've seen this happen twice both times it ended up with full engine rebuilds and both guys thought they would save themselfs a few pounds by doing their own oil changes not a smart move lol P.S. i dare say no one on here would do that to their Supe would they

Got my strong mate to get mine off. Was tightened by a 30-foot breaker bar I think.
Need4Speed
It never ceases to amaze me that people buy what was a £40k car and then try to work on it without decent tools.
adi
Guilty as charged but i think i have less room on the 1JZ than you do on the 2JZ. I've done it about six times so far and nothing has dropped off, but i'll use something else in the future.

I think about working on it - so with my brain guess that means I'm also guilty as charged!
Andrew
Well went to Toyota and asked about an SST which would have set me back £37.60, in disgust I returned home and took it out on the filter. The thought of having to pay £37 seemed to have done the trick, unscrewed it on the first try
Need4Speed
Maybe I should make some of these tools up!
Guest Martin F
Lots of places supply that same tool nowadays. If i remember rightly it's like a big cup that fits over the end of the filter.
Need4Speed
The one I have is a belt on a slotted 1/2" sq. drive socket that works a bit like a chain wrench; very effective

Going to any meets or track days soon not seen you for a >while. I doubt ill do any more track days until my Radical arrives, which wont be till I shift a few of my motors Hey BJ, is you 355 for sale, if so how much ? Brian Jackett
You are getting a Radical, hey I want to get one of those. My car is not for Sale but If someone gave me what I paid for it £48,000 then I would sell it. The car is absolutly mint. Did not think you liked 355's. I added a tracker for insurance. It has just had a £2000 Cam belt service, but have to be honest that the clutch I suspect will need replacing soon which I think costs £600 fitted. So price would be £48,000 - £600, Bargain
B1SEP
BJ, I did like your 355, I liked it a lot, though it doesnt really suit me, its a bit too "smooth" for my liking, I like 'em hard...Diablo, Skyline etc etc.....but then again...if the price was right....lol Cannot wait to get a Radical, spoke to the factory the other day and they are working on a twin Hayabusa engined version, imagine 400bhp on a car weighing less than 500kg's!!!! Same power/weight ratio as a 1300bhp Supra....ROFL
Brian Jackett
I went out in one with a single in it on a track day at Brands as a passenger. The car was on slicks. They were the fastest thing on the track, they actually got banned from the C & B session as they were frightning people. It was such fun all for only 20 odd grand. Don't think anyone has ever described the 355 as 'smooth', you need to keep it at 8,250 (Maximum hp range). Let us know and I will take you for a drive What is the right price then?
