Guest suprageek
Hi I have a 93 tt bpu sup, with a boost controller running 1.2 bar, it stopped blowing warm air, so I thought it would be an airlock, I took the rad cap off and it fell apart, it's an SRD rad and the rad cap is the one that was on the rad when I bought it from srd, the cap is rated to 0.9 bar, do I need a higher pressure cap for my car, if so what's recommended, thanks
Mk4Gaz
You shouldn't need a higher rated one, the stock one should be fine. I have a good used one here if you want it?
Guest suprageek
The stock one won't fit the srd Rad Gaz it's too small
Mk4Gaz
Ah, funnily enough I did think that, but the one in your picture looks oem, so I figured the srd rad might have the smaller jap filler neck welded on. A 0.9 bar cap should be fine in any case bud, but some people do go for either 1.1bar or 1.3bar. I think running a higher pressure, raises the boiling point of the coolant - but in turn, will also highlight any sealing problems in the system easier
Guest suprageek
Found a cap will see if this one falls apart, heat restored after a lengthy rad bleed thanks gaz
CanisLupus
Where did you get the new cap? I have the srd rad too and suspect that the cap is not working correct.
Guest suprageek
I got the spare cap off an srd Rad that was in the shed that burst, I will get a whifbitz cap ordered I think
Chris Wilson
So apart from the cap and the rad itself, what do you reckon to them? Maybe you have an over pressurising issue, seems odd for rad to *burst*, AND a cap to fail. Never heardof issues with them before, they seem popular enough. Guest suprageek
Yea the last rad leaked, they do seem popular which is why I bought one, so how would I check for an over pressurising issue Chris? Cheers
Chris Wilson
Garages have pressure gauges they fit to the rad instead of a cap. You can cheap hobby ones on Ebay, but ensure they come with the right adaptor for your rad. Then run up to temp and see what pressure it gets to. Is it an N/A or a TT? Does it tend to run hot, or have cold interior heater issues? Either may be symptoms of head gasket issues, a combustion gasses in the coolant test should be about, or even under £
Guest suprageek
It's a tt Chris temp gauge never moves past the middle, this was a first it not blowing hot air, but as I said its fine now, I run The engine with the Rad cap off for quite a while till all the bubbles stopped and the air is v hot now in the cabin
Chris Wilson
Is the engine in a boat?
Guest suprageek
Feels like it sometimes with all the water squirting lol[emoji1]
Lee P
Was the rad cap a tight fit on the rad We had an issue wth one of these rads where the caps were too tight and they could not self bleed. We have stopped supplying them now because of this. Check this first but if it's not that then do some testing for head gasket failure Edited January 12, 2015 by Lee P (see edit history)
Guest suprageek
I dunno lee I just put the cap on the radiator as tight as it would go, all is fine now I've changed the cap, I think the head gasket is fine will have it checked thpugh, cheers

Feel the overflow tank and make sure it's warm and water is getting out the rad The problem we had was the kneck welded onto the rad was machined slightly wrong and the cap pulled down too tight and had no room to open
