TT6 Flywheel advice needed

Hi everyone, hope you all had a lovely xmas!

 

I have been searching for an answer to this but cannot find the right answer.

 

I have just bought an Aerotop with a twin turbo 6 speed manual conversion. I think the flywheel needs doing as I sometimes get a whirring noise with the clutch up in neutral which goes away when you put the clutch down. Also the car feels and sounds a bit clunky/jerky to pull away. From what I have read on here these 6 speed boxes are abit clunky anyway so would I be right to suspect the flywheel?

 

I will be taking the car to a mechanic for a proper checkover come January but am trying to prepare for any parts that it might need.

 

If the flywheel does need doing is this the sort of thing you would combine with a new clutch for logical reasons? The car is bpu and I want it to stay as easy to drive as possible with no horrible noises/rattles. Am I best getting standard replacement?

Where is the best place to get one at a good price? I cannot find a lot on eBay apart from lightweight ones which does not sound ideal from what I am reading on here?

 

i am hoping to get a decent feeling clutch and flywheel for £400-450 for the parts, does this sound realistic? If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.

in my time on this forum i've never seen a flywheel needing replaced, ever. that has caused a problem/fault its usually something to with clutch, throw out bearing or little bits in that area. remember the clutch is in 3 prts, replace all 3.

 

for BPU stock clutch is fine and will last ages. :)

Well that sounds like good news! I have no idea how old the clutch is. I must have misunderstood the supra buying guide on the bit about the whirring noise. Would this cause the jerky pull away aswell? Hopefully it's not just me not being used to the car yet, although there could be an element of that ;) it's just tricky to pull away smoothly.

 

Has anyone got an idea of where I can pick up all the clutch parts for a reasonable price?

A transmission noise, heard in neutral, that only when the clutch is released (pedal up), is 99% certain to be the gearbox itself. Probably inernal bearing noise. these are old cars and old gearboxes, often having suffered the abuse of drag race starts. Could be (very) expensive I am sorry to say. A jerky clutch engagement is totally untypical of the stock clutch. has it got some inappropriate aftermarket one, maybe with a puck type plate? They can grab, and they also put fearsome shock loads into the gearbox, giving it a very hard life...

 

 

Anything other than the stock dual mass, damped flywheel will probably give drivetrain noise and harshness. this is what I offer for stock to mid torque increased cars:

 

I use the stock, brand new driven plate, as it is correctly

balanced, doesn't judder and will hold all but mega torque

highly modded engines or cars used for drag racing.

I modify a stock brand new cover to give more clamping force.

The reason I tooled up to do these is some of the aftermarket

US clutches I have fitted SEEM to be built from used cover

assemblies with reground friction surfaces, and a stronger

spring. I have had hellish trouble getting these to fully

release, because due to this seemingly thinner cast iron

friction face, the geometry of the clutch goes to pot, and

being a pull type clutch (the hydraulics pull the bearing

away from the engine, rather than the more normal push type)

it is a lot harder to effect a cure.

 

For 455 pounds plus VAT , you get a brand new driven

plate, a brand new modded cover, and a brand new release

bearing. I would rather fit myself so any complaints are down

to me, I see a lot of clutches damaged by people without the right gear

(a ramp and transmission jack, plus correct circlip tools and fitment)

or clutches fitted to patently *uggered flywheels. I will do a supply

only if you feel competent to tackle the job or are using a bona fide garage to

fit the clutch

 

 

Toyota use a dual mass flywheel (the flywheel is in 2 parts, an inner and

outer assembly, damped in the middle) which is now showing signs

of wear causing a lot of rattle when idling or on very light

throttle openings. For God knows what reason they are charging

about £400 + VAT for a new one, they look more like they should be

over 500 to me, but don't say anything :-) The very similar LUK dual

mass flywheel on Maseratis is nearly £1000 + VAT.... So if the flywheels

old enough or abused enough to be scored it should be replaced.

 

Fitting by myself will cost £175 + VAT.

You sure it's not just a lightened flywheel? They tend to be solid and make more noise. As Chris says, the stock one is dampened to counter this but most aftermarket ones aren't.

I do not believe it has got an aftermarket clutch or flywheel but I am only going by the previous owners description so I don't know how much he knew about it.

 

I guess I just have to get the car into a mechanic for a proper check over. I don't know how you would tell if it's aftermarket or not?

 

Perhaps I should get new standard clutch kit fitted first of all. Does anyone have the part numbers for everything required? Or a link to where I can buy as kit?

 

Chris Wilson looks like he knows his stuff but is too far away from me unfortunately.
