Swampy442
Trying to get the the bottom of this auto box issue which Im 99.999% sure is the torque convertor lock up solenoid not getting the signal to unlock. reading various manuals the signal comes from the ECU temp sensor, the throttle closed switch, the brake pedal. I replaced the TPS, which Im hoping is now giving the ECU its idle signal, but how do you check the idle signal? Is it part of the throttle motor assembly? Is it given out by the TPS? Swampy442
Theres a thread on here but, basically, when the car is cold everything operates perfectly but when its warm and you're coasting to a halt, theres lots of juddering as the engine approaches idle. The box itself is fine, kicks up, kicks down, can get all gears manually, its quiet, had the sump off to check the solenoids and wiring etc so its a signal problem. Chris Wilson
What happens if you disconnect the lock up solenoid wire?
chrispot
could the issue be with the lock up clutch? sticking when hot. so i would do as chris suggested so the clutch never operates, if all is good after that then i would have thought that it could be the torque converter or possibly the solenoid sticking releasing or not the fluid (i don't know how the lock up is performed) could it be possible to attach a pressure gauge to the box to confirm? anyway good luck, let us know what you find. regards chris
chrispot
forgot to add that you think it could be electrical,so you could fix a test light / led to the lock up solenoid at the ecu and can confirm or not that it's receiving the right signals? also i have a auto vvti supra which is all working ok. so if you need any voltages etc checked i can do this for you. regards chris

There is a Manual how to set the TPS Sensor right. I have uploaded it with my post. It's for the JSPEC Non VVTI but may work for your TPS too. Chris Wilson
I have seen most all faults possible with TPS's over the years and never seen one that affected auto box converter lock up, I would concentrate elsewhere. I can see various scenarios where it WOULD NOT lock up, few where it would lock and not release.
Swampy442
Ill disconnect the box electrically this weekend, see what happens. I was clutching at straws Chris, the TPS should give a signal to the ECU saying its at 0% throttle, so unlock the TC. Anyway, did a thing Ive not done in years and paid a garage to look at it, Toyota Lincoln plugged it in, found zero codes. They also washed it and hoovered it too So the master tech seems to think its the TC thats shafted.
