Bad to worse in New Orleans

I think it's something completely out of hand. WTF is Bush doing getting 2 ex presidents to help out. They knew it was gonna happen and they knew it was gonna be big. They should have commissioned all local bus's and coaches within 100 miles to come in and evacuate who they could. Now it's happened they need to get anything they can, boats, army veihcles, 4x4's to go in there and move all still there. Then they can consentrate more on shooting the looters. I just can't get over how a country who can go to war with other nations and win can sort out the current situation.

I just remembered this talking about looters....

A mate of mine was arrested and convicted of looting, about 10 years ago.

We used to drink in a pub a coupl of doors down from a newsagents. He's had a few drinks and started walking home, and spotted that someone had thrown a rubbish bin through the window of the newagents. He looked walked up to the now broken window to see what was going on inside, and spotted that their was a coffee mug with his name on, on one of those rotating stands which was now right next to him. He said it was kind of like a light in a dark tunnel calling out to him. Bemused, he reached out and picked the mug up, just in time for the local constabulary to arrive at the scene. They first tried to charge him with attempted burglary (or robbery can never remember which) but after seeing CCTV evidence, decided to do him for looting! He got a number of hours of community service.

First I'll always say that everybody has a right to their own opinion and should never be denied the right to express that opinion.

Why use two ex-Presidents? Two answers here: Experience and Influence.

Having the buses ready and waiting is a valid point but the problem lies in getting the buses to the stranded. This wasn't possible until debris had been cleared, water level lowered, and most importantly, area secured so that those buses and the people getting on them would be safe. People with guns shooting at authorities and rescue personnel must be dealt with and dealt with swiftly, otherwise the anarchy spreads and continues. If you've never been shot at, this is hard to understand.

"they knew it was going to happen".... On the tree-hugger Greenpeace front, you know the ice caps are mealting and weather is getting increasingly worse. We've all seen the Day After Tomorrow. Are you ready for a storm that sweeps across the U.K. freezing everything in sight? Is the government? Should they be? Can they be? You know the world is going to end some day. Do you know when? What are you doing to prepare?

Optimists focus on what they can change now to make things better in the future. Pessimists focus on what has already happened and who to blame for it.

I thought we were told about it 2/3 days in advance?? This is when the buses could/should have been sent in to remove people, and i'm sure if they worked day and night they could have got a large chunk of the people out. I know it's easy to say things like this know, but isn't Bush surrounded by teams of advisors to have every scenario planned out with other options waiting in the wings??

I just heard they are now airlifting everyone they can out of the area, but unfortunatly there's already been an air crash :(

Valid point. Noboby thought it was going to be this bad, and by the time they knew, I bet all the bus-drivers had already evacuated. I don't think there was enough buses anyway. Too little too late. I look at root-causes not small what if's. That's the only way to really prevent things from happening again.

Sad, piss poor, and disappointing. Way to set a good example. Every person they get on camera needs to be prosecuted eventually. Makes me embarassed to be an American. I think they're security guards though. Not sure, didn't have sound as I'm at the office. What a disgrace. If it were up to me, these people would be locked up or kicked out of the country.
