Kendo11
Evening all. I have read before (and was told when buying the car) that the W58 is a noisy box, particularly on start up. Mine is now getting to the point where it's taking a good ten minutes for it to quiet down, and even then it will still be noisy even after a decent run. No videos or sound clips as yet I'm afraid but I'm hoping this is a common fault, it basically sounds like a rotational grinding noise. Imagine a metal fan spinning against a hard surface, that kind of sound. Is this actually normal, or a common fault and if so what's the remedy? New clutch? Thanks in advance. Josh42
I have never noticed my W58's (either of them) to be noisy and take a while to quieten down to be fair. My current box certainly doesn't make much noise at all
Chris Wilson
A good condition W58 is all but silent. If you get a whirring noise in neutral, when you have your foot OFF the clutch, and it goes when you depress the clutch and engage a gear, it's shaft bearing noise. they don't handle much over stock N/A torque well, especially if they are already tired or high mileage. Kendo11
I see. That's very similar to what I have I think Chris. Will get a video on Friday. In the meantime what parts would need replacing, just the shaft bearing?
Chris Wilson
Probably lots of stuff, layshaft bearings, mainshaft bearings synchros and hubs, several needle roller bearings.... It can be an ongoing and costly do refurbing manual boxes. A good used one will be far FAR cheaper than rebuilding yours properly. Manual gearbox repair parts have historically always been very expensive.
Kendo11
Bugger. I've just been out there to do a recording and funnily enough it's not doing it now, obviously sporadic. Guess it'll have to be a used box then. Not good
Kendo11
As I'm lacking knowledge here, I'm guessing it wouldn't just be the clutch or flywheel or something?
Chris Wilson
Gearbox shaft bearings, in my experience, stay noisy once they are worn or damaged. Lubricant temperature can muffle it, when the oil is cold it will be thicker and dampen the noise, when hot the noise is usually more noticeable. A noisy clutch release bearing that's in permanent contact with the cover fingers may exhibit what you describe... possibly.
Kendo11
Hmm. Guess my shopping list of nice shiny new parts will have to be put on the back burner then.
Chris Wilson
I would just drive it as is and see what happens. I have known noisy manual boxes go on for tens of thousands of miles when they sound like they shouldn't get you off your own driveway Just make sure there's oil in it. They don't like no oil... Kendo11
Yeah it has in fairness been like this since I bought it over 18 months ago with no serious deterioration aside from when it's been sat for a week or so.

Kendo11
Expensive and rare from what I've seen mate.
stevie_b
I didn't think the W58s were rare or expensive. The 6 speed boxes certainly are. E.g. £500 ono: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Supra-W58-Manual-Gearbox-Drift-Aristo-Kitcar-Healey-/141502555156 This one's come from a Supra and not a Lexus, Aristo etc etc, so should be a straight swap with a minimum of mucking about. Kendo11
W58 noise: http://youtu.be/rXCSKq8A9fw Managed to get a little video/sound clip earlier. Not the best quality but for the first 6 or 7 seconds you can hear the noise I am describing. Ignore the other minute or so as I forgot I was still recording!
