Right i know we have all been here before but im looking for ideas on the best way to save my W58, im in the process of going na-t and know the engine will be good but i do worry over the gearbox, im not harsh on the box but saying that if i wanted to do a few track runs it would be nice....anyway... what sort of things can we do to help save the box apart from not going turbo lol the box has done 61000 and will have a stage 3+ clutch and a new flywheel

suggestions welcome

my only options seem to be

1. stock pile W58 boxes which seems to be difficult even to find 1

2. drive like my dad

3. stop moaning and pay the stupid amout for the v160 conversion

4. R154 box but just dont know what to expect from it

Sell your W58 while it is still good and buy an R154 from a late model Soarer (direct replacement in a MKIV) or a JZX90/100 Chaser (front section of prop needs shortening).

I did this and the R154 conversion set me back about £800 all in.

I'm delighted with the R154, five gears are all I need, no point carrying around a sixth if it's never used!

Here is myself & Jellybean out for a couple of lazy laps in my R154'd car at Mondello.

FWIW I broke third gear in my W58 while the car was still NA. I stripped it down and rebuilt it with parts kindly donated by member. I also modified the retainer for the gear on the shaft to make it more resilient to thrust as I think it was a hard down change that caused the problem in the first place. After that the W58 performed faultlessly bolted to a 1JZ and was sold on as a working gearbox when I managed to source the correct R154.

Is there a guide to this strengthening mod you did anywhere? About to buy a w58 for my soarer, so might as well do whatever I can before it goes in.

If the W58 is working as it should leave it alone mate, the whole gearset needs to be stripped to do the job I did on mine, not a job to be attempted yourself without the proper equipment, of which I barely had enough, and I'm fortunate enough to have 50 year's worth of accumulated H/D tools at my disposal.

There is absolutely no guarantee that yours would give the same trouble anyway, you could go to all that trouble and break a selector fork two days later!

I didn't bother with a rebuild thread but the main jist of what I did to improve my gearbox's chances of survival can be found here
