Scooter
Have you removed the fan/aux belt and tried running it for a short while just to check the low idle is still there?
ATB
Did that first thing this morning and it ran great at 1900 rpm on cold start, so I turned it off right away. To say I am happy is an understatement as I doubt I would have had the knowledge to go looking for vacuum leaks other broken stuff.... Could the PS pump cause this? I could turn the wheel easily by hand. The old and new oil could have reacted on each other in a bad way? Anyway I will empty the whole system off oil and clean the PS reservoir properly again and fit the new pump when it arrives and refill with new oil. Any advice/tricks when doing this? Scooter
Ok, check the other pulleys the belt runs on. power steering should spin easily with finger pressure. Aircon pulley should spin really freely like a bike wheel, smooth surfaced tensioner pulley in the middle should also spin very freely. Small alternator pulley should be stiffer but no roughness when turned by hand. water pump should be like the power steering smooth but not completely free of resistance. Scooter
Small rubber cap 'may' go on the bolt on the suspension turret if it's small mushroom shaped?
ATB
Sorry, I missed your post I have replaced the power steering pump, flushed the reservoir and put new fluids in the whole system. I can't drive the car due to snow, but I moved the car and the steering felt very good and smooth. The noise did get a bit better, but it's still whining. I figured it could be the belt so i rubber a bar of soap under the belt (saw it on a YouTube video) and the noise disappeared completely for 30 seconds before coming back. Did the same thing again with same result, so I guess the belt is shot.
Chris Wilson
Some brands of belt make a noise from the get up and go, some start late in life, a new belt should fix it, if it bugs you.
Big Mark
Glad I just found this thread. My power steering pump appears to be making the same noise. Looks like another job to add to my winter list..
