supra joe
Ok guys so after getting my car from the bodyshop it threw the pulley in to the fan. Had it replaced and was running fine. Then.... Driving along and one HID started flickering, then went out. Then the other... Lost power steering and dash lights started flickering and died. Replaced the alternator from a 97 spec from keron. Now while driving along I've noticed the lights start to flicker and dim when a come to traffic lights, almost like the car is about to die. Stereo goes off then comes back on, but is fine whilst actually driving. I've had the engine bay sprayed too. Could it be that it has a bad earth.... I'm kinda stuck now and it's bashing my brain Any advice is welce thanks.
j_jza80
Crank pulley? Al Massey described these symptoms to me the other day when talking about crank pulley failures. Measure the charge you're getting from the alternator, should be 14v when running. Also check the alternator belt is tight.
supra joe
Crank pulley has just been changed. Will measure voltage.
Al Massey
Alright Joe. This does sound very much like a failure around the crank pulley. Mine did this with the power steering then died. I'd check the voltage, and get a mate to turn the steering wheel why you are doing this. It puts a strain on the engine and the revs go up so it all should spin faster, that's how I knew my crank pulley was dead. You should be able to see all pulleys turn and the belt going round, if it slows down then there is a problem. Maybe take of the fan belt and make sure everything turns ok including the tensioner. When checking the voltage, check different earth points to rule it out. If I think of anything else I'll post up or text penny
jim
Basic one Joe but easy to check to rule out...double check that the battery is clamped in tightly and the cables are properly secured on the battery terminals.

This would be my suggestion too, including the 2nd nut that is on the positive clamp that joins the earth wire. Sounds like when you slow down the battery shifts a bit somewhere and breaks the connection. Is it clamped down tightly too?
supra joe
Yes it's clamped in with the battery support. I will get Stevo to check it over before he flys off to fight Somali pirates lol. The crank pulley has just been changed too. Just wondering if the bodyshop has earthed the car up properly after spraying the engine bay... I'd still check the pulley to be safe There is an earth point right behind the battery Took me and Steve days to find that was the fault in his car as it wasn't done up properly
j_jza80
Probably check the earths to your HIDs too, these are notoriously troublesome.

Will get in it later and keep you posted. - - - Updated - - - Probably check the earths to your HIDs too, these are notoriously troublesome. Yeah starting to think they are not worth the hassle. supra joe
Maybe a reason why when I turn the normal headlights on the high beams stay on too...
