FOSSIL_FUELS
Afternoon... I've got a 94 NA Aero. Car was running fine, when all of a sudden, it just died. When I started it back up, a bunch of black smoke came out the exhaust. The car does not idle, but will die if you don't keep your foot on the gas. It feels like the car is in "limp mode". The car has very little power, and trouble going through the gears because of that (it's an automatic). Still plenty of black smoke. Figured out that black smoke means too much fuel. We reset the ECU. Did nothing. The black smoke coming out of the exhaust as raw fuel that is being dumped in the motor but not igniting. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Chris Wilson
Is it faulty?
FOSSIL_FUELS
Don't know..No way of checking But going by the cause and effects of it failing... It makes me think it's the problem
Chris Wilson
That's an expensive way to try and mend things, if you don't have a multi meter they can be bought off Ebay for less than £12 for something half decent. EVERYONE who might have cause to fix electrical stuff should have one, and a 12V test light built into a screwdriver body, using a normal incandescent bulb (not an LED). FOSSIL_FUELS
Replaced the coolant sensor. It was rotten. Got a new one off of Euro car parts for 9 quid. Replaced it... reset the ecu... Ran great for about 10 minutes... Then it started playing up again. Back to trying to work out what's wrong Cheers for the advice all. Chris Wilson
Does the mangement light come on with the ignition? Or is the light not working at all?
stevie_b
The immobiliser needs to be off (i.e. car ready to start) for the paperclip trick to work. Edited November 6, 2014 by stevie_b (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
You must first check the bulb functions, sometimes the connector on the little PCB behind the light module suffers dry solder joints and needs them carefully re soldering. Sometimes slamming the palm of your hand on the top of the dash above them will get them going, temporarily. Another reason for no management light and other odd engine hiccups is a ground is off under the intake manifold runners. There should be two 6mm eyeleted black insulated leads to two bolts into the runners. Hard to see them!. After work in that region it's easy to forget to fit one or both. FOSSIL_FUELS
The management light doesn't work on igignitiont all. I've checked the board works... As I put it in my mates supra and it did. All other lights on that board work. Any chance of a pic of the rough location of the leads please. I know there are 2 brown leads connected to the inlet. Didn't see any black ones ?? Cheers Rob
