Am I being stupid... Why can't I turn off my heater/blower?

Ok I've had a problem for a few months now where my heater/blower/air con unit ONLY blows hot air.

It's normal for about 5 minutes and as soon as the car is up to temp or you accelerate a little harder the unit just blows hot air.

No matter what setting it is on, if air con is on or off etc, just hot air. It's so annoying I have to divert it to my feet and drive with the windows open which when living in a wet and windy Scotland is not ideal.

I'm going to get it looked at soon, as it driving me insane, but correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't seem to find any way to completely turn OFF the unit so that it doesn't blow at all. I know in other makes and models this is possible, is this just Toyotas way of being annoying..?

(p.s. Even with the vents shut on the system, the force is so strong it finds it's way out around the edges of the vents, I can't stress how much this is pi$$ing me off lol)

Your heater control is probably broken then, mine turns of everything AC/heater/Fan related.

Would explain why you have no control over everything too

I can still turn the blower up as well (not that I want to), would that still function with a broken heater control?

2 possibilities spring to mind: the heater control panel (not sure if that fits in with you having fan speed control though), or the mixer flap control rod underneath the passenger-side dash (when that fails though, it usually gives you nothing but cold air, whereas you've got nothing but hot).

The Off button not working suggests it's the heater control panel.

My last supra had issues with the temperature not changing, a new heater control solved it, perhaps worth a try for £30

My heater is on hot all the time, even when the temp dial is all the way down. Everything else works fine though. I think I'll give this a punt as the problem, cheers Ric.

Sorry to hijack Gordy :p Hopefully it's an easy a fix as I'm hoping mines is :D

The soldering on the circuits can be prone to faults with age which could be causing the off button not to work.

I had a problem with my old UK spec on the controls (granted not the heater off switch), I took the control apart, found the circuit board and on the back used a fine tip soldering iron to heat and reset the solder on the board, from memory I think I did all the points on the board while it was off, when I put it back in everything worked perfect!

Its an easy job to do, if this doesn't work you could try a 2nd hand heater control if anyone has one for sale.

Ok, so today I took the car out after a month lying on the drive and still it blows constant hot air, but alas my heater control works now, so at least I can turn off the blower (although it still pumps out a little heat)

Time to investigate further I think and get in amongst the workings of the unit...
