Help Please- reverse gear will not engage

Hi guys,

Really need some help please, I have a 98 6 speed TT with a HKS triple plate clutch. Today it has stopped going into reverse, all other gears are fine, no higher revs noticed during gear change/acceleration so hoping its not the clutch.

Could it be as simple as the lift up mechanism? When trying to go into reverse it goes into 4th or 6th and tries to move forward.

Before I investigate and remove the surround, the gear knob and the lift up mechanism, can I simply remove the metal plate that bolts to the chassis with 4 screws in order to expose the gear level and have a look whats going on? I'm not that technically savvy so wasn't sure if anything will drop off underneath or spring out of place when I remove it?

Picture of the plate I want to remove below:

Thanks in advance for your support.

Thanks for your help on this Chris, so we took the plate off to inspect and all looked ok, no issues with the lift up mechanism, but there was too much play in the gear lever.

So we got the car up on the ramp, from the diogram you posted above, the problem was where the control shift lever joins the yoke, when we removed the dust boot one of the nuts had come off completely and the others were all loose, once these were tightened up, hey presto, drives better than ever!

Thanks again for posting and the diagram Chris, appreciate it.
