I've bought a new rad since mine left me stranded on Sat night .. top up and drive 4 miles .. top up and drive 4 miles ... no fun.

Is the rad difficult to swap over?

94' TT auto. I know it has the gearbox cooler in the bottom etc.. I just wondered if anyone has a step by step guide to replacing it or whether you should just throw it into the garage?

cheers all :)

It is easy and will take an 1/2 hours max.

  • Remove the shroud ( 10mm bolts)
  • Undo all 4 hoses ( 2 large water & 2 small auto )
  • Undo the sensors at the bottom
  • Undo the top two rad clamps
  • Lift out the radiator
  • Do reverse to re-fit

Half hour job max ... took 4 hours.

granted the shroud took 2hrs to get it off and get new ones, then bracket bits to fit the new rad.

The new rad is a bit thicker and need a lump chopped out of the battery tray to get it back in. It fits .. but a bit of a squeeze ;) finished in the dark with only a torch in my gob to see what the hell I was doing haha

Well worth it though as you may see *yuk*

It was pitch black at 8pm when I got to the point of fitting the new one. Had to use my Land Rover headlights just to see wtf I was holding.

Everything looks fine underneath and the mounts were surprisingly clean and not brittle.

I've just picked up the new condenser so I'm going to have to get the rad off again soon to get this in.

All being well Matt with parts that fit ;) and day light, you were quite right, I could do the next one in half an hour lol
