I don't know the full story but I believe it was meant to be banned in the 70s due to the hallucinogenic properties of the drink. Apparently someone forgot to sign the document that banned it (not really, but there was some oversight) and the drink was never actually banned. A distributor finally worked this out in the 90s and started shipping the booze over. It got some hype for a year or 2 then fell away. Very much a speciality drink now, especially the legitimate 70% stuff. I believe the variants from France are the most expensive, stuff I had was Czech IIRC.
