SupraLEDrears
So my car overheated last week. Got the AA out and my waterpump was leaking. As I have the breakdown repair service, they opted for me to go to Halfords to get it replaced and they'll foot the bill up to £500. I would never really take my car there but it's just next to my studio so I can just pop in to get the car. They replaced the waterpump, timing belt and radiator. So last night the heater was blowing hot cold hot cold and I suspected that the coolant was low. Put a pint of water in this morning and the car overheated after 9 miles. Went back to Halfords as thought it might be the waterpump and he said it must be the headgasket. I've noticed no smoke from the exhaust and I'm sure that there are tests to determine a faulty headgasket as he said it will be 11 hours to take the head off and check which will cost me £480. Is he having me on? Could it be air trapped in the system or a faulty thermostat as it seems to be pushing cooland out from the overflow tank. Any help appreciated as always. Al Massey
Check your oil and coolant, see if it's a funny colour. You can get compression test done I believe. I would check the coolant myself and try bleeding it properly

Swampy442
he said it must be the headgasket. Must be the head gasket eh? And are Halfords Toyota specialists? If they drained the coolant system Id say look for an air lock first, also get someone who knows JZs to make sure the correct water pump is fitted, correctly. - - - Updated - - - Oh and you want a sniff test, to check for hydrocarbons in the coolant. SupraLEDrears
Now this is weird. I drove home with no overheating problems. At motorway speed and at standstill. Even let it run for 10 mins outside to see if anything happened but gauge sat at the normal position. I did notice the middle of the radiator looks a bit wet and it was steaming from there a bit when I turned the engine off. Also the hose at the top of the waterpump had some wetness around it. Nothing coming from overflow tank and put my finger on the hose, didn't seem to have any pressure building up. I'm gonna park on the steepest hill I can find tomorrow and bleed it to see what it does. Oil looks spot on and the exhaust..well... smells like 99 ron
Ian C
Rad cap? Common cause of overheating as it fails and so doesn't hold pressure
SupraLEDrears
Rad cap? Common cause of overheating as it fails and so doesn't hold pressure It's a new one that came with the new rad last week.
SupraLEDrears
So bled the air out this morning. Not overheated but still shooting out some water from overflow. Is I'm sure my old rad cap was 1.1 bar whereas this one reads 0.9.
Guest Budz86
Bear in mind the coolant system is self levelling so if you over fill it slightly, the system will steam for a few miles once hot while the excess boils off. Nothing to worry about unless it's clouds of it or water leaking out of somewhere
SupraLEDrears
Yes it sprays out around a pint at a time
Graham1984
Personally I wouldn't even let Halfords fit wipers.
Tricky-Ricky
Could of easily been an air lock, also don't forget that the rad cap allows coolant to flow to and from the rad and header tank as it heats and cools down, Ask Hafords if they have conducted a sniff test to determine if it is indeed the head gasket. SupraLEDrears
That's whats I asked him and he was saying that he won't know until he's taken the while head apart, hence me thinking he's trying to con me. I also found a bolt coming out of the power steering pump nearly hitting the pulley and I'm 100% sure it wasn't loose before. So I'm now at the point where it's not overheating but still pushing coolant out the overflow tank.
Benjy
Ring the AA, tell them you're not happy with the condition that your vehicle has been returned and that you want it repaired by Toyota. Properly.
