wattwatt
Hi all, Wondered if anyone could give a newbi some advice, just purchased my first TT6 and am so happy I've finally got one but there's a really really annoying knocking from the rear suspension which I need to get sorted, I have no idea what particular coilovers they are but I'm sure there tein stamped... My question is could I use standard Toyota top mounts on tein aftermarket coilovers? Also I am only making an assumption that it's the top mounts if not what else could it be knocking and squeaking from the rear end?
jazz1
Could be anything, drop links, wish bones etc or leaking suspension your best bet get it on the ramps to investigate.
Swampy442
Tein coil overs are known to knock, every set Ive ever had knocked. They're just cheap, garbage suspension. Im guessing they're pillow ball top mounts too? Its not likely stock top mounts will fit Im afraid. Inspect all your suspension arm ball joints, especially the upper arms, as they are bank bracingly expensive.
Nic
Some Tein coilovers can be used with standard top mounts, it depends which model they are, there should be a label saying which they are.
wattwatt
Ok cheers gents I will get my workshop (I work at a Toyota dealership) to strip them all down and check out the main bits was just hoping it isn't something too expensive top mounts would of been nice and easy/cheap specially as the disks & pads are needing to be done soon too, the joys of buying an old car but God damn does it make me smile every time I look at it and drive it Swampy, you say these are cheap garbage are they improvement over stock as I see on the forum a lot of people seem to upgrade to them??? AndyJax
Never had any problems with my Tein coilovers no knocking or anything and they re about 8 years old not bad for cheap garbage.
Swampy442
Are they an improvement over stock? God no, not in my eyes. But thats down to your point of view isn't it? Id rather have some ride quality so I avoid what is, in essence, 4 iron bars in place of your springs. But thats my opinion. I take it you want to lower your car, otherwise the best stock upgrade are the Bilsteins. And that is a well known fact
wattwatt
Fair enough it's nice to have different peoples opinions and gives me plenty of ideas to look at I'm not massively concerned about ride comfort, as this is only weekend toy and will prob only do 3k a year and if I'm totally honest I actually like a stiff ride but I do want something that is built with decent and correct products to make a lovely car. The lowered look is my own personal preference tho

wattwatt
Got car up on ramp today to find out what model I have and they are tein flex ??
neilp9876
Mine are tein flex, they have pillow ball mounts that start to knock after 5000 miles, they're not particularly cheap either. Mr Wilson on here can manufacture are replacement set that will not wear out, I was intending to get him to replace mine when they went again. If you search for pillow ball mounts there should be thread somewhere discussing it, or give him a shout.
Nic
I think the Tein Flex coilovers were available to buy with or without the top mounts ie. you could use either Tein or stock top mounts, they are discontinued model though now and I'm not 100% sure. Chris Wilson
Tein should give you a CD with new dampers, so if you just cannot wait that short time before they knock you can pop the CD in and listen to what you have to look forward to very soon
wattwatt
Well after reading through your comments gents and also lots of forum searching and Google searching although these are extremely popular coilovers they are definitely prone to issues which knocking and banging is something that I really can't put up with Lol... So with that in mind I'm considering stripping them all off and put them up for sale and replace them with some bilstein shocks, garage whifbitz lowering springs and some garage whifbitz adjustable anti roll bars?? I've already got front and rear strut braces. Your opinions welcomed? And any advice or alternatives I should look at?
Chris Wilson
I do my own custom valved Bilsteins and lowering springs, which I can tailor to specific needs, if they might be of interest. There are quite a lot of MKIV's running variations of this set up, so no doubt a suitably phrased question on the forum will get some independent opinions of them. Chris Wilson
Hi, I was pressed for time last night. Here's a more comprehensive reply, also sent by e-mail Dan. I do my own Bilstein set up, based on brand new Bilstein Sport dampers, made in Germany, not the lesser units made under licence by Toyota as optional fitment.. I valve to suit the desired characteristics, either normal touring, fast road, occasional track day, dedicated racer, or drag racer. Springs are also wound to match these characteristics. I specialise in suspension development and set up, especially on track race cars. I also supply stock Bilstein Sports, made in Germany, at £125 plus VAT per unit. Cost wise for me to build and supply to suit your needs (and I suspect fast road is what we should aim for), the full kit, supplied and fitted with the geo reset to suit, and assuming no adjusters are seized), would be £1380 plus VAT. To supply only we are talking £1100 plus VAT. You will need a set of stock top mounts, I may have most or all of them used, I would have to check. They never seem to give any problem, even at high mileages. You would also need a set of spring top rubber seats, these are Toyota only, and include the shaft protection bellows sections. They are different front and rear as are the top mounts. I suggest these are bought new, most used ones are split and ragged. I would stick with stock anti roll bars. Some uprated ones are junk and can break. Most give a very harsh ride, especially over single wheel bumps. By all means fit your strut bars, but to be brutally frank, they are more for looks, no off the shelf ones are anything like stout enough to do anything worthwhile. Please feel free to ring me if you wish to chat about anything. I am on 07971-952084 at your convenience. Thanks for your enquiry, the lead time on bespoke units is about 1 to 2 weeks. wattwatt
Chris, thanks for your very indeepth reply and after looking into 'Stock' Toyota bilsteins even at cost price the difference is not large enough to say I would rather save the money and feel for the extra few ££ will be getting me a much better setup and with you building them custom to the setup I require this will give me a much better ride. In terms of 'Fast Road' I'm guessing this will give me a firmer feel with good stiffness when 'having a play' but then not to hard to make it uncomfortable on long journeys etc? If there is anyone that has got Chris's fast road setup on there Supra's would like to give me there feedback good or bad (PM if would rather) maybe even a pic or two just so I can see the ride height? I better get savings some pennies so can look to get a set of these on order at somepoint might be looking at the new year now as I'm going to do the brakes at the same time and really haven't got the cash at present but will be in touch soon Chris. Thanks again.
Chris Wilson
You can have whatever ride height you like, but without MAJOR mods the MKIV does not handle well at all if lowered very far from stock.
wattwatt
Yeah I had guessed height would be part of the 'custom' setup that we would discuss when ordering, I was more asking what others had gone for with there's when having your setups installed I see alot have lowered the rear by 10/15mm and the fronts by about 25/30mm?? I'm guessing with you comment that may be too much of a drop?
