mwilkinson
Honestly, I'm like the wind on this. Today my mind is saying I will stick with the stock colour. I think the quality of the finish, even with the stock colour, will be so good as to make it pop and stand out.
rider
The colour choice if you have your value head on will sensibly depend on whether you think you will ever sell the car. The original VIN colour on a classic always adds value but the hit can be mitigated to a large degree by electing to go with another OEM colour. If you don't have any intention of ever selling it then there can be no reason not to go with whatever colour and finish that floats your boat. mwilkinson
A resale value couldn't be further from my mind, so that isn't a factor in my dilemma. I think it a sad old world to own things like this only to keep them in a condition, likely against your hearts desire, to make a few quid. Instead I want the look of the car to be original, but with uprated suspension, brakes, turbo etc. I just can't decide if that element of modification extends to the colour. If I do change it, it will probably only be to a darker gunmetal / metallic grey - but never say never!
mwilkinson
Small update. Because the weather has been so rubbish I've only just had the shell collected from the dippers and taken to the bodyshop. Resotred to getting a car cover and a roll of pallet wrap. Fortunately the rain held off on the trip back - bonus! Car is now with Kane at the bodyshop ready for some progress. Massive thanks to Dan the recovery driver and Kane for going up and getting the car. Kane will hopefully get a chance to properly look over the car in the next few days, advise on what work needs to be done etc. I know we've already had a few photos of the car since the dip, but here are a few more.

mwilkinson
Car is now on the rotisserie and Kane has had his first proper look over the shell. A couple of gremlins have emerged. Rusted out seam on the bottom of the passengers door. This was entirely unexpected. I knew I had some chassis rail damage on the drivers side that had deformed the floor slightly, but it also looks like we've suffered a little forklift damage at the dippers too on this and the other side of the car. We are looking to see if we can source a few of the chassis rail parts to simply swap out versus try and repair. Fingers crossed. So a bit more work to do now on the chassis rails and floor pans to get them back into shape.
Rob W
Think you may be in luck Matt, the rear section that is mostly damaged on both sides is still available. REINFORCEMENT, FRONT FLOOR, NO.3 57427-14010. Amayama list price only £24.45 per unit which will be far more cost/time effective than repairing. Front section of the rails is discontinued.

mwilkinson
A few pictures from today. Mainly the repair of a number of non-OEM holes put into the shell for aftermarket equipment. This is a hole for the factory bonnet sensor, but I no longer need this and can take a feed of the bonnet latch sensor. Kane also started working on the bonnet, cleaned up and prepared for epoxy primer. Good news is that this is in good condition. mwilkinson
James at Retro Roadsports has been doing some work on the car today. He's unrolled the left hand side rear wheel arch and trimed it instead. He has also been working on a beautiful dent to the left rear quarter I put in the car by reversing into a dismantled engine stand in my old garage. It was this damage that started the whole rebuild project. This is very pleasing to see removed from the car. These images show the slapping, shrinking and blocking of the damaged area to get the dents out.

mwilkinson
More updates now that the bulk of the metal working is now done. Unfortunately James had no choice but to repair the damaged chassis rails as these turned out to be discontinued. I think he has done an amazing job considering how mangled they looked before Bottom of the door has been sorted, luckily it was just the return of the outer skin on the inside edge and hadn't affected the bottom of the outer door skin. Another casualty of the modification war had been the end of the radiator mount on the near side of the engine bay. mwilkinson
My wife and I popped into see Kane yesterday. I needed to drop off the remaining panels to paint - new front wings (both sides), fuel cap, front and rear bumpers, spoiler, dismantled wing mirrors and handles. Also met James from Retro Roadsports for the first time, which was a pleasure. Very pleased with the cars progress. Kane has been straight onto the other parts today, getting them epoxy primered. rider
Quote My wife and I popped into see Kane yesterday. Does she ever ask how much is all this costing? My wife never did, thankfully but I figure that has to be a rare attribute in the female World..
mwilkinson
Simply put, yes. She is the Corporate Tax Partner in a firm of accountants and both a qualified accountant and tax advisor. She is sighted to all expenditure on the project. She knows this is an itch I've got to scratch and is incredibly supportive of the endeavour.
