Richie_k83
Hey guys, Excuse the title but its the only way i can think to describe the noise my car is making Firstly its a jap spec na auto 93 model. Basically if the car is revved up to about 3000rpm + and not under load, it gives a fairly loud vibration/growl type noise. It sounds like its from the top of the engine/inlet plenum... The noise was there before the belts were changed and is still there now. It is absolutely fine to drive, no warning lights etc. if you put your foot down and keep it there, its fine. If you do it and lift off its there.. Any thoughts?
Guest FullAttack
Is it a tapping/ticking sort of noise that's relative to rpm? It's pretty hard to diagnose without hearing it..
Swampy442
Is it not on the turbo side rather than the intake side?
Dnk
A good quality audio recording is required, rule out easy obvious things first, crank pulley, aux idler pulley, viscous coupling, cam pulleys tight, etc Edited September 11, 2014 by Dnk (see edit history)
Benjy
Is it not on the turbo side rather than the intake side? It's an NA mate...

quarryman
check your viscous coupling for play , towards radiator/engine,that makes a noise like that
rider
check your viscous coupling for play , towards radiator/engine,that makes a noise like that I had something similar develop within a viscous fan on an old Capri special I owned. Removed it and ran some engine oil into the casing and it sorted it, free moving and silent for years afterwards. Anyone trying this fix though need to be aware that for older couplings the grease will be thinned by any oil fed in so you don't want to slop in lots. Or it could be the water pump bearing? Richie_k83
I will get a video up today, i suspect/hope it is the auxiliary belt tensioner pulley. I have a new one on its way
Dnk
Pop the aux belt off and you'll soon know
Richie_k83
Sorry for the delays with the vid.... I popped, the auxiliary belt off, it didn't change anything. However i do have a knock on tick over now so i think the engine is about to shit itself. Have a listen, all thoughts welcome. Sorry about the poor iPhone quality... https://vimeo.com/106620038

David P
It is a bit of a coincidence and a wobbly crank pulley would make a rattle.

Chris Wilson
Pull the plug cover and see if the cam belt is slack. Possible tensioner failure?
Richie_k83
Pull the plug cover and see if the cam belt is slack. Possible tensioner failure? I changed the cambelt the other week, the noise was there before though
