Guest SupraScott88
Hey So finished work got into the car, started up fine, but noticed a strange whiring noise and that the revs were bouncing slightly when idling.Thought it was maybe cold engine so drove home. Going downhill, dropped into neutral and boom dash lights up master warning light, battery light, cat warning light? (looks like an exhaust with wavey lines on top) and an oil light ( low engine oil i think, oil can with wavey line below) went it put fuel in and car would barely start, got it started thank god. But now again is barely starting and is idling horribly, but if u rev it sounds fine and drove fine, only seems to be when revs drop. Any ideas anyone? Guest SupraScott88
Did you have to get it replaced and if so how much did that sting you if u dont mind me asking? Reason i was thinking alternator is that before i bought the car, toyota "apparently" refurbed the alternator because it was corroded, this was 3 months ago. peter richards
well initially I was going to get it repaired , but the bit that had gone the guy couldn't get , so I had to have a new one ,£150,but it was a duff one it only lasted a day , it has een replaced now and all seems ok all the lights are now out. just take it to a garage and check its charging , if not its gone , if it is then obviously its something else
Guest SupraScott88
i see, not to bad.. hopefully wont cost too much or im gunna have to start selling my ass on the street corners to pay for it haha! im certain it is the alternator then because before i bought the car, you would start it up, take the keys out, try to start it again 5 mins later and it wouldn't start. But toyota was supposed to have refurbed the alternator, so its probably failed again.
Guest SupraScott88
So had to go to work this morning, just about got the car started, but car wasnt idling right, wipers, mirrors were running really slow. So figured it might be the battery Replaced the battery and seems to be turning over and running fine. I still have the warning lights on, im guessing these are going to need to be cleared for them to go off?
Chris Wilson
No, I suspect the car still has a charging issue, and the new battery will soon go flat. You might want to check the ribbed outer pulley on the crank damper is still there, too. What battery terminal voltage do you see at a fast idle with the headlamps on full, the heater blower on full, the heated rear screen on, and the wipers going? That'll show whether the alternator is working properly. The dash lights don't need re-setting, they are indicating a continuing electrical fault. Guest SupraScott88
god i hope not :/ Nah looks like pulleys are all there, id suspect if it anything then its the alternator on its way out, it was supposedly refurbed by toyota 3 months ago, just before i bought the car.app it was correded and they replaced the a 120 amp fuse? and refurbed the alternator. Dont have a battery tester myself, but the car is going up to supra specialist ireland on tue to get looked at, because im having hesitation at full boost around 4000-6000 rpm. Somehow maybe linked? Looks like you were right bud, out in the car today, Battery died and car had to be jump started twice. So looks like i need a new alternator
