peter richards
just cheched my oil all seems ok golden colour on the dip stick , but had a look into the neck and it looks pretty black and grimey. cleaned out as much as I could reach , but it looks black further down , any cause for worry or is it normal peter
j_jza80
If the car hasn't been used a lot, or not been warmed up properly for a while, it is probably just condensation, which is normal.
peter richards
yes not used much , could do with an oil change although it looks golden , feels ok , probably been in there a few years
Dnk
Black and grimey means its been there for a while, where exactly are you cleaning ? i'd leave well alone unless you can take the part off and clean it properly. I'm guessing the cam cover, if so if you want to clean them remove them
Ric
Short journeys without proper warm up can create larger than normal carbon deposits and stuff which will be the black stuff you are seeing? If the oil it'self is golden it's probably just build up, as DNK says though, take the covers off to clean properly rather than dislodging something into the depths through the oil filler. Paul372
Sounds like it's had abit of pour maintenance over its time and its burnt oil due to not changing the oil regularly, I wouldn't try cleaning it unless you take it apart just incase you drop a lump of grim down there
