Speedo not accurate and cruise control not working SPEEDO has stopped working

hi folks, My speedo and cruise control were working fine on the way to the anni meet. On the way back I had some issues, firstly my boost pipe came off on WOT which I mananged to put back on (going to buy decent clamps)

secondly the speedo kept bouncing a few mill up and down when accelerating and the cruise control doesnt work, this was after the passenger side arch liner caught onto the wheel on a full turn and this has now been worn/disitegrated off, (currently dont have an undertray on yet and forgot to fix the bottom arch liner down ) I am thinking when this happened it was about the time when I experienced the problems above, could I have broken a sensor?

Lads took the car to the pod and again was experiencing the same issues, my speedo was jumping around after 70mph, on the way back it stopped working all together. The engine light is now on too! The cruise control was flashing on and off too.

Iky I do not know how to check for fault codes, but im sure I know a person that does ;)

you'll more than likly get a fault 42, but your problems sound very common... usually linked first to a faulty speedo converter / wiring or worse case the sensor.... ive not known the sensors to go wrong that often, 99% of the time, the speedo converter or the wiring loose.

Took my speed converter out and wired things back together, my speedo still doesnt work at all however the engine light has gone and now when I drive the car the O/D Off light flashes. And the miles are not going up in my car either. I bought a new converter from keron and will try to wire it up, do you think it could be the converter still? Or are things pointing to the autobox... :-/

I double checked my wiring again today and all seems good, so i am fairly confident its not the speed converter.

I searched toyo diy for speed sensor and came across a few of them (see attached)

Now looking at the Front LH sensor if that was to get damaged would that cause them all to not work? My arch liner came off on that side it was around that time when I noticed problems.

That suggests you either hadn't returned the wiring to stock correctly when you removed the speed converter, *or* the speed sensor is faulty.

Do you mean you checked the wiring with the speed sensor still removed? If so, you can disregard my comment about stock wiring above.

If you mean you've checked the wiring with the converter in situ, be aware that it's usually the internals of the speed converters that go faulty, and you can't usually fault-find them by inspection.

Initially i connected the cut wires using blocks and noticed one of the wires came off when I got the same issue, I then taped them with electrical wire, I will take some photos and show which wires were connected to what. And how its connected now.

I bought a thor converter off keron which I can attempt to connect and check whether it works.

I'm still thinking it has something to do with my arch liner dieing on me and maybe breaking something under the car, or is that just a coincidence?

Bump on this thread, I have had this issue for over a year now but I want it resolved now and all my other plans are on hold until its resolved....

Summary of the diagnostics

Removed old speed converter / limiter

Wired in new(used from Keron) thor speed converter

Tried a gauge cluster from another car

Fuses have been checked (petrol and water temp gauges are fine)

I haven't tried a gearbox sensor (the one I bought off DavidP was not for my car) but that would not explain my issue with the rev counter not working?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the speed cluster so I can check whether there is a live feed going to them?

thank you.

is your ABS warning light on?

In my lexus RX, the front ABS sensor had a dodgy connection which caused the speedo to fluctuate at speeds over 80kmph. Especially since the arch liner ripped out, it might have damaged the wiring along the ABS Sensor without tearing it completely off.

Worth checking this in my opinion...if not, then try a speed sensor on the transmission.

Hi mate, no my ABS light is fine. I get the engine light coming on when I am going over 80mph or ragging the car and its a speed sensor error code.

Im going to try the transmission sensor a go first and then have another look around the car, I did look around the arch liner area and did not see anything obvious.

Good news, a fellow member was kind enough to remove his speed sensor and try it in mine and guess what? It worked! well for the speedo, the rev counter still remains broken.

The part number is

33482-59025

Ill be ordering one tomorrow and will let you know how much it costs from Toyota. Wish I had bought a new one ages ago now, couldn't source a 2nd hand one and the one I did was different from mine. With the car being in and out of the bodyshop this whole situation just took ages but looks ill be coming closer to the end. Thanks Iky.
