Supra wandering all over the road

Hi all.

Having a few issues since I fitted new tyres,

Basically the car always used to follow the dips in the roads abit. But since I've fitted bigger front tyres the car follows every little dip in the road (nightmare on a back road)

Also the car now seems to pull to the right a tiny bit on acceleration then swings to the left after letting off the throttle.

I have since had a wheel alignment and the car is set to theoretically drive straight. This did help the on and off throttle drifting abit.

Previous tyres were 205 40 18s. New ones are 225 40 18.

Theory so far. Bottom arm bushes.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Jonny

That sounds like you have the incorrect tyre sizes, stock sizes are as below:

235 x 45 x 17 (Front)

255 x 40 x 17 (Rear)

Ideally you should use a tyre size calculator like below, which would help you with the size of an aftermarket wheel. Keeping it as close to a stock setup as possible.

http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator

I currently run 18's and I have the following setup, which run quite nicely, previously I had a larger front wheel and like you mentioned had a lot of steering being pulled on roads with camber.

235/40/18 (Front)

265/35/18 (Rear)

Although this might not be the cure for the problem you are seeing, it is something to consider. Other things which could cause the problems you are describing is incorrect tyre pressure or different tyre pressures.

The wheel alignment\balancing should have picked up any issues with wheel weight, camber, toe or potential suspension issues.

Wider tyres on the front will cause the car to tramline more ie. the wheels to feel like they are following the contours in the road, but 225 tyres are narrower than standard 235 tyres so it shouldn't be that.

The majority of Supras on the road will still be running around on the original factory fitted suspension components which will be getting VERY tired now. I completely overhauled all the suspension components on my own car when it was 9 years old and was shocked just how huge a difference it made, it felt like a completely different car to drive, handling, ride quality and grip levels were massively improved. Not cheap but the best money I ever spent on my Supra.

Get the car to an experienced mechanic and on a ramp to thoroughly check out all the suspension components for wear.

I guess so, wasn't sure if it would make a difference. Would be interested to know what the OP is running on the rear setup.

Good points regarding the suspension overhaul.

Tyre pressures are checked regularly. Wheel alignment did throw up a few little issues but the camber, toe and caster have been set all round. I could upload the print out if wanted.

Wheel wise I have 18x8 fronts, 225 40 18. 18x9 rears 225 40 18. I know these are abit too small from standard but that's all I have ATM. I do expect the car to tram line to some extent but it's now a lot worse.

The tyres that were on the wheels originally were 205 40 18s all round.

Suspension wise I have tein springs and dampers, everything else is stock.

46k on the car so the suspension is pretty clean (I know this doesn't stop the bushes from deteriorating). Me and a mechanic friend tested for loose bushes, track rods, drop links etc. the only thing was slight play in the drop links. And I mean slight!

I might try slightly smaller fronts, like 215 40 18?

Going smaller isn't going to help :D

That is also a very skinny rear setup, although as Nic's says the larger wide wheels seem to track the most, I can't see fitting skinner tyres helping, especially with road handling.

Were the front sub frame bolts checked? They can go loose over time.

If you were in London at any point I'd be happy to take you out in mine, great even in the wet (massive difference too in the wet when I went down from 245 to 235).

Fit some stock 17" which correct tires and see if the problem persists ;)

You may be able to borrow a set for testing...

This would be the best course of action. This way you can eliminate wheels and tyres from the equation if the ride improves.

Pirelli pzero rosso all round, none directional but they have an inside and outside, which are on correct.

Going to swap the wheels side to side to see if the problem moves.

Alternatively I have a spare set of 18s which I will try and see if the problem is still there.
