Power steering line copper washers.

Well for the life of me I can't find the bag I labelled up copper washers that go between the PAS line banjo's and steering rack, there is 2 large banjo fittings and 2 smaller that go to the pump bit on the rack.

 

Does anyone know if there is a special type or thickness or just whatever fits?

 

Also do copper washers need heating up red before being clamped?

What ever fits snugly around the banjo and is big enough.

 

If you can bend it slightly with your fingers then it's ok to use otherwise it might need anealing.

 

I did have one recently which looked like a copper washer but wasn't after heating the copper plating came off.

It didn't seal either. Only discovered after i saw a dribble of coolant from my temp sensor.

Forget alloy and copper washers, just buy some Dowty seals from Faye at Speedflow. She stocks a vast range of sizes and should have them on the shelf. I think they are 18mm ID but just check. A Dowty seal has a bonded in RUBBER sealing ring inside an alloy ring. they are far superior in that sort of application.

Copper, aluminium, even fibre washers will be fine as well.

Any decent local car accessory shop should have something suitable ! And for a few pence each . .

 

Just take one of the banjo bolts in with you, so you get the right size

 

As has been said, any soft metal, copper, aluminium is fine - they just act as a gasket so when you tighten the bolts, you get a perfect seal - same on fuel lines as PAS.

 

(I'm amazed that people go to main dealers, motorsport specialists, or even buy online for basic bits like this that you can get from any local shop!)
