Big Mark
On a couple of occasions recently I've put my foot down after joining the motorway, felt the gearbox kick down, seen the revs passing 6k but the car barely accelerates for what feels like a 2-3 seconds. If I had a manual I'd say I had a slipping clutch. But I have an auto and am not that knowledgeable about them. I've checked the fluid level (with the engine running) and all is fine. Is this the beginning of the end for my box or just something that happens now and then?
Swampy442
First off don't keep nailing it until you find the problem. Second, drop the fluid and check the condition, if its brown and smells like burning, its shot. Anything except cherry red it needs changing. Lastly when the fluid is out take the sump off and check/clean the filter, its a very fine mesh and clogs easily.
Big Mark
I did the 2 litre fluid change in November but considered having a reputable garage do a full 8 litre fluid change and new filter. I'll check the fluid again and see what colour it is. Just wandering if anyone has had the same and what was the cause/outcome?
supraGZaerotop
They are old gearboxes now in they, i have had this happen to my car once before, maybe 9-10 months ago, exactly the same, i have since change all my vac lines and a vsv iavc i think it is, cars fine now. Ive got 2 lt of trans fluid left for another change soon, i do think these boxes respond really well to a service

I'd like to get the filter replaces and the full 8 litres of fluid changed.
supra_ufo
Mark i had the same issue, probably the VSV it can cause similar issues. The connector that goes into the VSV at the back of the engine could be loose (in my case it wouldnt clip in as i snapped it), check this connector and maybe clean it with some electrical cleaning product. I would also recommend fluid change
Big Mark
Ta, sounds like an easy enough thing to check. Though I have no idea what the VSV looks like or does. I'll look through the repair manuals on the forum when i get a change later.

Ric
how do you do a full fluid change on the auto box? surely you can't start it or run it while it's empty? do you have to constantly push fluid through untill it turns red? Perhaps through the rad cooling pipes?
Swampy442
What I do is pull the EFI fuse, remove one of the rad lines, turn the engine over until the box is empty, refill, do again until the fluid is clean. Can someone tell me, what the hell do VSVs have to do with the auto box operation?

Dazzi
Take the transmission return line off on the radiator and point it into a bucket. Get a funnel ready in the dip stick hole. Run the engine and pour transmission fluid in as its coming out. You'll see it turn bright red. This is when to stop. Check the level. Do not run it dry! Big Mark
Because mine did exactly what mark is describing and it was the connector that was loose pictured above. My VSV connector is fine and the problem still persists. Plus changes at low speeds are sluggish and not smooth. You can literally feel that the car is about to change and then there's a delay as it does it. Doesn't Chris Wilson service auto gearboxes with a full fluid change along with the filter? Chris Wilson
I can do a filter and fluid change but it's highly unlikely to fix the issues. If a filter is blocked it's because a brake band or clutch plate is breaking up. A box rebuild will cost many times the price of a good second hand one. It may be worth seeing if there are any ecu codes stored for the auto box before doing anything else.
Big Mark
Thanks Chris. I'll have a look over the weekend. Update: Just popped out during lunch and I had no fault codes at all. Which in some ways is good but doesn't help diagnose the issue. Edited August 7, 2014 by Big Mark Update (see edit history)
Big Mark
Gearbox did it again this morning. Any experts on auto boxes out there? Does this sounds like an internal gearbox or maybe a torque converter issue? i.e. get a replacement one?
Chris Wilson
No gearbox fault codes is bad as it suggests the fault is internal in the box, and not some electronic control glitch.
Big Mark
Guess I'll be in the market for a replacement gearbox shortly then
