Kristian_Wraae
Does anyone know the exact differences between the VVTI and non-VVTI transmissions? Electronics / features / internals ?
wile e coyote
Tiptronic or standard ?
firin Supra
Im pretty sure its just the valve body and the electronics including the gearbox ecu
Kristian_Wraae
?Yes triptronic vs non. Do they drive differently?. Internals ect. Is one better than the other ?
Branners
Just for info, I dont believe they supplied the VVTi with a standard auto, it was only ever tiptronic on VVTi cars. Would like to find out if that is true so if anybody has a standard auto on a VVTi then let me know as I prefer the standard auto to the tiptoe. Kristian_Wraae
When I look at the wiring diagrams it looks like the VVTI has two more solonoids (s3 and s4)
David P
N/A auto trans has 3 solenoids and T.T. (non VVTI) auto trans has 5, if that helps?
Kristian_Wraae
Yes, but the VVTI has two more judging from the diagrams. So 7 in your terms.

Kristian_Wraae
I just wonder what the extra solonoids do.
David P
Is there an S6 & S7? Here's a pic of a T.T. valve-body, the 5th solenoid is below the second from left. Kristian_Wraae
well, they name them s1, s2, s3 (SD), s4, SLT, SLU, SLN on the TT non VVTI they name them s1, s2, SLT, SLU, SLN. So I assume the S3 and S4 are extra compared with the VVTI.
David P
I've never played with a Tiptronic transmission, yet would wager a pint that the only differences would be in the valve-body and the transmission would function happily with either a T.T. or N/A valve-body and supporting electronics. Kristian_Wraae
Does anyone know if the VVTI transmission is engine braking on downshifts? On a non VVTI with a stand alone transmission controller like I have it free wheels until rpms are matching wheel speed.
Kristian_Wraae
I think you are right. My problem is that I have had ATF in USA build me an upgraded A340. And by some kind of error (not mine I'd like to say) they have used the wrong core - a 2JZGTE VVTI transmission. The valvebody is upgraded and now I need to know how to program it. I haven't taken delivery of it yet so if I don't know how to control it I don't want it.
David P
Engine braking is controlled manually with the stick. D = Engine braking in O.D. & 3rd & flappy-paddles function in all gears. 2 = Engine braking in 3rd & 2nd & flappy-paddles function in 1, 2nd & 3rd. 1 = Engine braking in 2nd & 1st & flappy-paddles function in 1st & 2nd. In Manualised mode, (flappy-paddles) I use the stick to change into 3rd which gives engine braking when using the flappy-paddles to change down to second. It might sound a faff, yet I do this without even having to think about it.

Kristian_Wraae
I have a PCS transmission controller already wired up to my car. I have the TT valve body. So I would just need to know what the two extra solonoids do and which signals to send. There are enough outputs on the PCS to run it. David P
If you're determined to keep something you don't need, ask PCS.
Kristian_Wraae
I'm not going to have it shipped here unless it would be a better transmission. I have emailed Ryan G, maybe he knows something about the signals.

If they haven't yet sent you what you didn't want, why can't they alternatively send you what you do want?
Kristian_Wraae
I expect they will. But there could be some issues regarding who is to blame for the mixup. Also the transmission is now finished and I have been waiting since february.... I think they by mistake did a 2JZ-GTE upgraded transmission instead of the 1JZ-GTE VVTI transmission upgrade I asked for.
David P
The plot thickens. I've never tinkered with 1JZ-GTE VVTI and/or transmission, yet from that additional snippet I can deduce; 1JZ-GTE applications use an "N/A strength" transmission and unless 1J-GTE VVTI applications use the stronger variant as per 2JZGTE VVTI box, the 2JZ-GTE transmissions are 2-300 fwlbft stronger. Kristian_Wraae
I use a 1JZ-GTE VVTI transmission in my 2JZ-GTE MK3. It is a direct swap if you use the mk3 rear housing. Stock drive shaft and runs on a JZA80 TT ECU. Retains the ABS sensor and mechanical speedometer which is located in the rear housing on the mk3. Problem is strength. That is why I wanted it upgraded.
